Brina Palencia

He was kind of a pioneer of that role in dubs at Funimation as well.

He had done it on a few other shows, and he had done it at the beginning of One Piece, and then he kind of trained brina palencia in the art of adapting and directing english versions of songs um and she's you know a classic musician and singer uh and so she took over it for most of the rest of one piece and future funimation dubs that needed songs dubbed um but he still did like the you know speaking of sunny straight um Not only did he, you know, kind of give Sonny his first really weighty, serious, dramatic roles and stuff like Mace Hughes in Full Metal Alchemist, especially in the first series, but also in One Piece where, yes, he is the comic relief.

He is kind of playing Krillin again for a lot of it.

uh but the depth that goes into usopp's character in the water seven arc um i remember uh our friends at the one piece podcast who have guest starred on this podcast uh they just put out a tribute to him where they basically just uh kind of made a compilation of all of their interviews that they had done with him over the years, where he was always extremely gracious and, you know, went into all the detail of the things that he wanted to pursue with it.

Yeah, so there's still some stuff that needs some cleaning up there, I suppose, to make sure it's all on the level and things, but...

Yeah, so we're still in that phase, I guess you could say, where it's almost like a transitional period for some of those resources and stuff, but yeah.

Yeah, that fundraiser, that is the one thing that I probably should have brought up a year ago or a year and a half ago, because that was run by J. Michael Tatum, Brina Palencia, Brandon McIminnis, and...

Even before he knew he had cancer, just the costs of those surgeries and the recovery of it with our wonderful American health system, he needed a lot of help.

We'll get into that in a little bit.

There's nothing wrong with that.

But I can tell you what there's also nothing wrong with, and that is the fact that once again, guys, we do have the lovely Brina Palencia here.

And I'm sure some of our listeners are like, "Y'all just talked 30 minutes about Halloween and candy."

... tremend- like some truly moving, uh, cut-wrenching, but just tremendous reads I've had over the last week.

Um, I think reading what Brina Palencia had to say, and Brina-

Yeah

... stated like, "I knew him personally, but since this is a public account, I'm just gonna talk about, you know, our experience working together." And knowing that M- Mike was a musical director too at Funimation, and I think what that meant was when Funimation used to adapt songs into English-

Now it's a very different role.

I know Brina Palencia told you her story of just like rocking up there and asking how to get in the building.

That would not work today.

Yeah,

Yeah.

So all to say that Brina makes a great point about this, where maybe in Japan this is just really egregious, crazy behavior-

And they say stuff like this.

Right.

So if you are a teenage boy out there watching My Hero and you have these, this is what Brina says, you have these feelings, these emotions, you, you, you say these things maybe.

'Cause you're trying to be funny, trying to fit in, and now here you are watching this show and everyone's like, "Oh, you're like that character.
