In India, a BRICS summit is taking place with 11 countries, including Iran and several Gulf nations who are now at war.

The meeting, where leaders criticized unilateral tariffs and sanctions, represents about half the world's population and focuses on giving emerging countries a voice.

NPR's Diaa Hadid has more.

BRICS is effectively a forum for emerging economies.

It's aimed at countering long-standing Western dominance, and there's leaders from more than a dozen countries who've turned up.

And Scott, it's quite the gathering.

The clashes are now threatening to rupture cross-border supply chains.

Meantime, Trump's blaming Iran for attacking a crucial oil pipeline that's since shut down in Saudi Arabia as Iran's president visits India for the BRICS Summit, along with leaders from Russia and China to discuss a larger global agenda.

The highest level deliverable that we should expect is, is actually a joint statement out of this, uh, uh, this year's BRICS meeting, which is actually pretty remarkable because of the, uh, you know, really wildly divergent interests of a lot of the countries that are here today.

I mean, most notably Iran, uh, whose president is, is, is here and delivered a very fiery speech last night, essentially a speech of defiance against the US, saying that Iran will not surrender in the face of the US-Israeli war, which is now in its sixth month.

Meanwhile, at the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, China, Russia, Iran, India all managed to agree on a joint statement calling for maximum restraint in the region, which is notable because their foreign ministers couldn't even agree on a statement back in May.

India is hosting the BRICS leaders summit in New Delhi over the weekend, bringing together leaders from major emerging economies.

China's Xi Jinping is visiting for the first time since 2019.

Vladimir Putin is making his first in-person appearance at a BRICS summit outside Russia since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Their presence, along with Iran's Masoud Pezeshkiyan, will put the focus on the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, which have tested the BRICS push for a unified global voice and greater economic clout.

The summit also comes amid strong criticism of BRICS from US President Donald Trump, who views the grouping as a challenge to American power.

That's forcing New Delhi to strike a delicate balance to reduce possible friction with Washington.

The event has been a relatively low-key one, in sharp contrast to the spectacle three years ago when world leaders descended on India's capital for the G20 summit.

Trump said he had spoken with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

At the BRICS summit in New Delhi, Iran's President Massoud Pazeshkian and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed Al Nahyan met to discuss easing regional tensions.

The talks came after Iran launched multiple attacks on the UAE and other American Gulf allies.

And from the BRICS summit, the 11-nation group called for calm in the Middle East-West Asia in a joint statement.

The group expressed deep concern over escalating tensions, called for exercising maximum restraint, and condemned deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure.

In parallel, regional diplomatic efforts are underway.

According to jpost.com, Gulf states are engaged in key meetings, including the BRICS summit in India, where the UAE's crown prince met with Iran's President Massoud Pazeshkian to discuss de-escalation and regional stability.

Further talks are planned for Oman, signaling a readiness among some Gulf nations to engage with Tehran.

Jpost.com adds that Saudi Arabia has shut down its east-west pipeline as a precaution following earlier strikes.

Meanwhile, remember, at the same time, over in India, we talked about this this week, I said these meetings were coming up, and they're on right now, the so-called BRIC The BRIC plus meetings, BRIC stands for Brazil, Russia, India and China.

That's an economic sort of alliance block that was formed some years ago, and now they've pulled another a number of other countries in that.

And it's to be a counterweight to the US economy.

So now you have the implications of Brazil and China and Russia, India cooperating with Iran.

Iran is at the point of having to surrender its insane regime because their economy is totally collapsed.

But if they get inside of the financial alliance from the so-called BRIC nations, they could get put on life support.

And so here we have, once again, Canada supporting a mechanism or an alliance that is allowing the insane Iranian regime.
