You know him from Lester Winchester McKendree, but his resume stretches way beyond that.

He's toured with Emmylou Harris, held down the low end for Brian Setzer, and built a career on rock-solid bass playing and a real musical instinct.

Mark's one of those guys who shows up, listens, and makes the whole band sound better, as well as writing his own songs and putting out great records.

We got to sit down and talk about his journey, the bands, the road, bass playing, and the kind of stories you get from someone who's been doing this at a high level for a real long time.

And it was a great time.

I mean, it was a lot of fun.

Well, so let me ask about the other big one, Brian Setzer, and how that happened.

And that must have been absolutely sort of getting back to your roots maybe a little bit, you know.

Oney's bopped on the Columbia record label from 1956 right here on Go Cat Go, the rockabilly show.

We also enjoyed some Brian Setzer in the set.

I got to admit, I was kind of scrambling, Matt.

So I just picked out that track from his recent Surf Dog solo disc, There Gotta Have the Rumble.

So that was Brian Setzer with The Cat with Nine Wives.

Oh, I can't imagine the alimony.

That would be right in a poor house for sure.

It's not in the middle of town, but it's on the side.

And if you want to be famous, you know, Jerry Seinfeld, Alec Baldwin, or the Stray Cats, Brian Setzer, Marvin Hamlisch, Timmy Van Patten, Dick Van Patten, you go to this fountain, you take a cup, it's got to be a paper cup, can't be anything solid, nothing.

You know what I mean? And then a ghost radio by the Brian Seltzer orchestra.

Just because it's Brian Setzer and he's the guy from the Stray Cats, right? Yeah,

He's from Brian Setzer.

He's from Minnesota, right? Or he lives in Minnesota? He's

living here.

A lot of Mexican flair to it, obviously.

But also that rockabilly thing, all the way down to the Brian Setzer type of thing.

A Yackety Sax almost solo style.

I don't know why she's doing it.

And then we get the Brian Setzer orchestra and who seems so out of place here.

I can't believe they got popular.

Like that swing thing was something I like, you know, just young enough for like, I like just missed it.

commercial was, I think they were on the same time.

Because that sort of revival was going on, especially in LA and all that stuff.

Brian Setzer had been doing that kind of stuff for a while, but he definitely leaned fully into it then.

And in 99, that summer, he played at Boston City Hall Plaza with the full orchestra, like his 40-piece band for free.

And then these rockabilly bands are playing that were great.
