brian you've had a chance to talk to obviously police officers who were in that cold case unit um how does what mike just said kind of match up to some of the perspective that you got in talking to them
20:49
Yeah, I think that's exactly right.
20:51
You know, when cold case units and Mike, you'll correct me from what I want to gather of cold case units is that there are times there's an ebb and flow sometimes to how robust a cold case unit is and budgets affect those things.
21:08
Right.
21:08
So in Phoenix, they went for a while without really having a very extensive cold case unit.
21:15
So it was back in the 2000 aughts that they built the cold case unit back up again.
21:22
And I think it had to do with sort of a new district attorney and a new focus on solving some long unsolved murders.

One is, what's the most surprising thing that's kind of occurred in this process of working on season six of American Nightmares? And two, I'd love for you to, again, kind of pitch it pitch that story to the audience you know I think that what you have done with it so far has been incredible and there are lots of great twists and turns but you can kind of you're living it on a day-to-day basis um in a very you know intense way um so one I'd love to know kind of is there anything that's happened that has surprised you or um you know caught you even off guard and two just kind of getting more uh letting the audience know one more time what they can expect without any spoilers for season six of the canal canal murders
122:12
What got you interested in murder?
122:16
Well, it's what really got me interested in the case in particular, which I've been following for several years.
122:22
A lot of people don't know the canal murders case, which happened in the early 90s in Phoenix.
122:28
Two women riding their bikes on the canals.
122:31
horrifically, grisly murders, 92 and 93, they were the first use of forensic genealogy to solve a murder.
122:40
Not just the United States, in the world, the Canal murders case was the very first one.
122:44
And so I actually became friends with a forensic genealogist named Colleen Fitzpatrick, Uh, she's the one who cracked the case and we were out having, I'm here in LA.
