S4E4: Brewster McCloud (1970)
B
14:25Bjorn OlsonHOST
It's like,
J
14:26Jaime RebanalGUEST
that's, exactly why Brewster McCloud himself just wants to set out for flying because he just he already knows he's not a part of society and he doesn't really have any interest in becoming a part of that.
R
14:40Reece CrothersHOST
And what great casting if you want to have a character who stands apart from the crowd.
R
14:46Reece CrothersHOST
When was Harold Lamont? Is it 73? I think
10 MINS LATER
B
25:18Bjorn OlsonHOST
So I had seen Bruce McLeod around around that time.
B
25:21Bjorn OlsonHOST
And that image of Michael Murphy just staring into the camera with one, you know, one brown eye and one blue eye and his final moments of life in the world.
B
25:32Bjorn OlsonHOST
Like it's like I said, you know, this we need to take this as like an absurdist comedy and a satire but that's the strength of altman is that he puts these you know um like moments of powerful uh you know like um an element of uh you know of truth and pathos that that that uh you don't necessarily expect in in like this movie is a lot like harold and maude in a lot of ways but i don't think harold and maude has those same elements it's its strengths are, are, uh, are different than what, what Brewster McCloud does.
B
26:09Bjorn OlsonHOST
But it's like, that's the, that's the element of Altman that we see that really makes this movie, you know, a strong, and I think it's, I think it's hilarious too.
The Interviews (ft. David Kittredge on Boorman And The Devil; Padraic McKinley on The Weight)
D
31:35David KittredgeGUEST
I mean, the, I could go down this list, this long list of like movies that came out of this period.
D
31:41David KittredgeGUEST
I mean, you had the hits like The Godfather, but like you also had like Brewster McCloud, you know, or, or, or Nashville.
D
31:48David KittredgeGUEST
Can you imagine any major studio [laughs] giving Robert Altman money to make Nashville? And Nashville is, as far as I'm concerned, probably one of the 10 greatest movies ever made.
C
31:58Chris HewittHOST
Yeah.
EPISODE 387: THE CHECK IN
C
84:14Chris PawlakHOST
Bud Cort, who has that cult status because he's in Harold and Vod.
C
84:20Chris PawlakHOST
Brewster McCloud, which I rewatch.
C
84:24Chris PawlakHOST
pretty frequently, but also when he got older, he has cameos in Heat, he has cameos in Dogma, he has cameos in But I'm a Cheerleader, Made, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.
C
84:37Chris PawlakHOST
All of those cameos in those movies when he's older are great.
The Eyes of Laura Mars (1978): Sex, "Twaddle", & One B.F. Dick | Part 1 (American Giallo)
B
38:35BillHOST
I mean, he's a Robert Altman guy.
B
38:37BillHOST
Originally he's in the original mash McCabe and miss Miller, uh, Mrs. Miller, uh, Brewster McCloud and a lot of people my age of course know him from Star Trek Deep Space Nine as Odo and then he's done a ton of voiceover work which I I didn't quite realize but I started looking into it and I was like wow this is like he's almost more prolific as a voiceover artist and it's again cool seeing him at a young age in the 70s uh doing stuff and I realized too I never connected him from the Altman era because I've seen him in the Altman stuff I didn't connect that with his Star Trek era and later work.
B
39:10BillHOST
So it was cool kind of connecting the dots and realizing he's the same person.
B
39:15BillHOST
Raul Julia.
S04E03: M*A*S*H
B
63:06Bjorn OlsonHOST
I love John Shuck.
B
63:08Bjorn OlsonHOST
I'm so excited because we're going to see him coming up in Thieves Like Us and he's in Brewster McCloud.
B
63:15Bjorn OlsonHOST
He did not have quite the career that the leads in this movie do, but he's such a presence.
B
63:24Bjorn OlsonHOST
He has this incredible long face and he's like... oh and that voice and that great voice um yeah he's great and the other thing i wanted to mention is like again michael murphy underused in a robert robert oldman
"HOLLYWOOD 101: MOVIES GO BACK TO SCHOOL" (158)
S
33:43Steve CubineHOST
That's it.
S
33:44Steve CubineHOST
But of course, this was a couple years before he made such an impact in Brewster McCloud, and then of course, Harold and Maude.
N
33:49Nan McNamaraHOST
Yeah.
S
33:49Steve CubineHOST
So great cast.

C
15:17Clay KellerHOST
... uh, of this whole endeavor.
C
15:19Clay KellerHOST
Uh, and then moving into part three, Ryan and Emily brought us into the top half with 21 The Delinquents, 20 Dr. T & the Women, 19 Buffalo Bill and the Indians or Sitting Bull's History Lesson, 18 Kansas City, 17 Brewster McCloud, 16 Vincent and Theo.
C
15:39Clay KellerHOST
How did we decide that's pronounced, Alonzo?
A
15:41Alonso DuraldeGUEST
I think we went with Theo.

Horror Hangout Podcast Bonus Episode : Interview w/ Boorman & The Devil Director David Kittredge
D
12:09David KittredgeGUEST
Um, but, but how else do you get like a McCabe and Mrs. Miller or a Harold and Maude or, you know, even a Godfather, although that was, you know, it was a bestseller.
D
12:17David KittredgeGUEST
It was a little easier to comprehend, but you know, like, uh, mash, uh, Brewster McLeod, any of Altman's movies, like, you know, uh, last picture show.
D
12:25David KittredgeGUEST
I mean, you just go down the list of all these fantastic films that are paid for by studios, big, like big studios.
D
12:32David KittredgeGUEST
Um, and they let the artists do what they do and they gave them the leverage and you they came up with some of the best movies ever made during that period of Hollywood.
