Brewing

Because I was a nursing major, but I ended up changing that in my, what was it, junior year.

No senior year of college And so I ended up Not really knowing what I was going to do with it So I was home brewing a little bit And I started emailing Brewers around Oklahoma City to see if I could volunteer Just to See what commercial brewing was like And ended up getting Connected with a brewer A brewery called Redbud Brewing Company Which is no longer around But Chase Healy was heading up that company At the time And so we started brewing together and, you know, I was working at Starbucks, going to school and going to the brewery at night.

And, um, we were contract brewing at the time.

And, uh, that led into a situation where we were at a co-op and then chasing it up, leaving town and kind of started another company.

So we'll add a bag of dextrose, a bag of maltodextrin, and then a little bit of dry malt extract.

just as a neutral maltose addition, just to kind of bump the sugars up.

You know, I've used Brewers Crystals in the past, but I typically will use DME just because it's a whole lot easier, albeit more expensive than Brewers Crystals.

But yeah, so we'll do that.

... uh, that has revived it.

So we'll be having a look at the story of the revival of Sullivan's Brewing.

Uh, they had their 10th birthday just a few weeks ago, and, uh, tasting two of their beers.

We have Sullivan's Maltings Red Ale and Sullivan's, uh, Black Marble Stout.

[laughs]

Yeah.

Uh, Dungarvan Brewing Company was operating down there.

I think that they have, um, changed ownership and been taken over.

And how do you feel now that in terms of the champions as well? So we've got, there was a number of breweries that appeared a number of times, which is cool to see, I thought.

There were people in the crowd that sort of started being like, oh, Bishno, Brewing and Tassie, Blackman's were another big one.

And Slipstream as well.

Yeah,

That's an awesome stat.

And another thing you all have in common, obviously you're all engaged with the Oregon Brewers Guild.

So I'd love to kinda learn a little bit more about what made the four of you wanna get involved at that level.

And Brett, because you were just going, so tell us why you thought it's important to participate.

So for the four of you in different parts across the state, I mean, bringing together people is one of the most important parts about beer and the Guild.

So what are the things you're doing these days to bring your members together?

Um, well, we just had our, uh, we've been doing an Oregon Brewers Conference.

We used to do that pretty regularly, and then I think because of the pandemic and for other reasons, we just hadn't done it again.

I, I had a plan going into today, and then I went out traveling.

Did a little, uh, impromptu mystery ride with the missus, and ended up over at Catalyst Brewing, and my second beer is going to completely screw up what I was gonna do for my first.

So-

That's a, that sounds like a real fucking find.

Tonight I have a offering from Komes, Komes, Komes Beer, uh, Brewing.

Uh, they're a, a, uh, Belgium outfit, I believe.

it's important where you plant your roots.

But anyway, so that was kind of right when Mantra, they started Life is Brewing and started Steel Barrel, if you remember.

Humulus Project.

Humulus Project, where their IPA runs, right?

What was once the Super Bowl of craft beer began waning in 2022 after a two-year break during the heart of COVID, returning to a 30% footprint reduction and ticket sales limited to just 40,000 attendees amid renovations at the Colorado Convention Center." This year, the fest moves to Levitt Pavilion in Denver's Overland neighborhood, with capacity around 13,000 over two sessions.

There'll be 202 participating breweries at this year's festival, and the Brewers Association prioritized breweries that had won GABF or World Beer Cup medals in the last five years.

They're gonna break it all down.

Chan is joined by Chani Adelson, the executive director of the Colorado Brewers Guild, and Jonathan Shikes, editor and writer for The Denver Post, who's also the author of Denver Beer: A History of Mile High Brewing.
