On to the second half of the third hour of this race we go and Brendan Hartley is now enjoying an 11 second lead over Mike Conway.
J
0:28Jonny PalmerHOST
But Mike's not really losing too much time to Niklas Nielsen, who's lapping at about the same distance.
J
0:34Jonny PalmerHOST
But is that a mark of the soft tyre starting to drop off? But strangely, they're not doing for car number eight, Peter McKay.
11 MINS LATER
J
11:50Jonny PalmerHOST
So are they doing a driver change at car 12? Because we are back to a three driver line-up now within Cadillac Hertz Team Jota.
J
11:59Jonny PalmerHOST
A big welcome back to Alex Lin.
J
12:02Jonny PalmerHOST
who is driving that 12 car again, back after a lengthy injury, and the 38 car has Earl Bamber, Sebastian Bourdais, and Jack Aitken waiting in the wings, probably Jack will close things out, Brendan Hartley keen for another stint, and he takes a well-deserved glug of water, maybe a bit of energy drink as well, electrolytes, And the splitter gets a good clean too.
J
12:30Jonny PalmerHOST
So Toyota have some room at their pit stop, you know, slacking the time, if you like, to allow for some aesthetic improvement on that number eight Toyota.
FIA WEC 2026: Barcelona race 1
J
9:03Jonny PalmerHOST
So they gained an extra seven points on, well, at least a few others.
J
9:08Jonny PalmerHOST
So Brendan Hartley, Rio Hirakawa and Sebastian Buemi lead the Drivers' Championship on 89 points.
J
9:16Jonny PalmerHOST
Alpina are going to be there or thereabouts, though, Peter Mackay, because their car's fourth and seventh places with the A424.
J
9:24Jonny PalmerHOST
100 starts in WEC in this car with this team, how does it feel?
36 MINS LATER
J
45:47Jonny PalmerHOST
Hansen slotted through into second position down at turn five.
J
45:53Jonny PalmerHOST
And that moment for Junker Dea thinking, I've almost made the corner, but then skittering its way at very slow speed, frustrating speed for Junker Dea, entirely off the road.
J
46:08Jonny PalmerHOST
the applause from Brendan Hartley amongst others that his man gets in front and some rather glum faces down in the Genesis garage they've still got certainly one car that's performing very well and that is Andre Lotre running in third position but the rejoining Juncker Dea has fallen back to 16th place it's not quite the rear of hypercar because the The Habsburg machine has had to work its way through from the early spin as well.
J
46:39Jonny PalmerHOST
So certainly plenty happening.
FIA WEC 2026: Barcelona race part 3
J
2:42Jonny PalmerHOST
So Rene Rast, Robin Frijns from the 20 BMW are on 75 points.
J
2:46Jonny PalmerHOST
Kevin Magnussen, Raffaele Marcello are six points fewer than that on 69. and they run in the 15 car but yeah because they're further back than their teammates and they are a total of 10 points adrift of the Kobayashi, Conway and De Vries Toyota but it's the fact that Toyota in car seven are running in second so are on course for 18 whereas for fifth place what do you get 10 so it's too big a gap and sadly for them from a driver's perspective 83 doesn't help them out either because they do score driver's points it's just that the 83 doesn't score manufacturers yeah they need the rain to come like you say and they need Toyota not to react too well to it but at the moment I mean Toyota's decision-making has been absolutely on point and the thing is the Toyota's been pretty fast in the in the wet weather as well Brendan Hartley said had the day been wet we were pretty confident because the car has been very stable regardless of condition and therefore if it changes as it has done through the race a little not as much as we were expecting but Toyota just have the best overall package this weekend and that is perfectly timed when they're trying to win a title.
P
4:05Peter MacKayHOST
It is, yeah.
P
4:06Peter MacKayHOST
And the thing is, is that you can make a poor decision with one of the cars as long as you don't do it with both.
23 MINS LATER
P
26:55Peter MacKayHOST
But the rest would maybe need to, as you say, put a little splash in when they went to get the wet tyres.
P
27:00Peter MacKayHOST
But that would cost valuable seconds in a battle like this.
J
27:07Jonny PalmerHOST
so total driving time so far this afternoon for Ryo Hirokawa he's done a little over an hour and 15 minutes Buemi's been at the wheel for an hour and 47 and we obviously had time as well for the middle driver who was Brendan Hartley he did a couple of stints so Buemi enjoying his 100th race in the World Endurance Championship and it could be a race win more importantly it could be a manufacturer's championship across both cars it could also mean that we're down to just two crews that could still take the drivers championship at Monza they would be separated by 17 points going into that final round but far from decided between the two heading for the temple of speed in Italy so on course at the moment the 92 porsche crew in gt to be within 20 points of the 33 corvette where did 33 rejoin seventh but we were expecting maxine martin to probably fall behind nikki katzberg to give katzberg the sixth place points back again and then it's a question of how far up charlie eastwood might be able to get because they also freshened up his tires i noticed during the last pit stop so uh brand new Goodyears that they were keeping in reserve for the Ulstermann the carnage at the start of the race you might be able to hear in the background not missing any real-time further contact thankfully but the the opening few corners of action certainly supplied us with plenty to talk about not least with Dani Junker-Dea from the lead of the race running off the road and through the stones at turn five still this combination of well different ways to attack the race for toyota last time in the cars of rio hirikawa and nick de vries were freshened up for their tires all round mediums for nick and a halfway mixture for rio hirikawa with mediums on the left and softs on the right whereas the chasing Alpine and Ferraris of Victor Martins and Antonio Fuoco go with just the single soft tyre on the front right corner otherwise mediums and Victor Martins is in a slightly false position as things stand because he'll be due in in the next one-fifth of a stint he's down to 18% energy now Antonio Fuoco will also be due some fuel as well before the Toyotas so that could be an advantage to Robert Kubica pretty sure that the two Ferraris 1583 had pitted on similar laps so quite why there's now that discrepancy between the fuel load the amount of energy between those two 499ps I'm struggling to remember there might be an obvious reason PMAC but Fawoka is going to have to come in about two-thirds earlier than Robert Kubica that could promote the Ferrari up as high as third actually the number 83 Ferrari into a podium position
P
30:20Peter MacKayHOST
Yeah, they've got good energy on board as well.
FIA WEC 2026: Barcelona Practice 4
J
29:31Jonny PalmerHOST
Global shift plus one I have no idea but that is obviously a settings change, telemetry change and the seven Toyota that Kobayashi drives is not fastest on the timer screen but his engineer says fastest on the track currently so of those cars that have a more significant fuel load it is the quickest it's also potentially one of the lightest as well though It's not quite as light as Miguel Molina's Ferrari, number 50.
J
30:01Jonny PalmerHOST
How does it compare to Brendan Hartley? Well, that car is in the pit lane.
J
30:05Jonny PalmerHOST
Andre Lotra has never raced at Barcelona.
J
30:09Jonny PalmerHOST
He's done lots of testing here in the past for various championships throughout his 30 years.
11 MINS LATER
P
41:41Peter MacKayHOST
It doesn't look like James Collado and Alessandro Pierghiri are going to win the championship as things look right now.
P
41:47Peter MacKayHOST
So, you know, it looks like they're going to stay on four WEC titles.
P
41:52Peter MacKayHOST
So if Brendan Hartley and Sebastian Buemi in that number eight Toyota win the championship, they will become the first ever five-time champions in the history of the World Endurance Championship.
J
42:03Jonny PalmerHOST
Yeah.
Episode 172 - WEC at Fuji 2026
R
5:27RenaelHOST
Um, about two hours in, uh, the rain actually started to dry up, so a lot of the race, um, a lot of the drivers decided to switch from the wet tires into the mediums.
R
5:35RenaelHOST
This actually saw Toyota, again, don't know what happened, um, Brendon Hartley, their second driver, just decided that he had basically some FIA-approved track and, uh, just decided, "I'm gonna do a double stint." Um, he absolutely just did not stop, uh, did a double stint and got a 10-second lead over the Alpine.
R
5:58RenaelHOST
Again, absolutely insane, and he held that lead for about four and a half hours.
R
6:04RenaelHOST
Again, I wouldn't do it.

They jumped Hirokawa into the lead with 20 minutes remaining.
W
30:24Will BuxtonHOST
And he then had to hold off Victor Martins, who was on fresh tires, Going for the win, but Hirokawa mastered the conditions, mastered the race, mastered his tyres and fended off Victor Martins and the French onslaught to secure what would have been a very emotional home win alongside his teammates, Sebastian Buemi and Brendan Hartley.
W
30:48Will BuxtonHOST
Great guy, Hirokawa.
W
30:49Will BuxtonHOST
All three of them great guys and great to see the number eight crew back on the top step of the podium for Toyota.

S
1:36Stephen McIvorHOST
Good news for Brendon Hartley in the WEC, the Six Hours of Fuji.
S
1:40Stephen McIvorHOST
The number eight Toyota won the race and Toyota's first race win at home for three years.
S
1:45Stephen McIvorHOST
More importantly, it put them at the top of the pile in the WEC championship, 10 points ahead of the number seven car, and man, was he happy.
FIA WEC 2026: Fuji race part 3
J
12:27Jonny PalmerHOST
Well, was that seven? I think that was car eight.
J
12:30Jonny PalmerHOST
Brendan Hartley, the better of the two position cars.
J
12:33Jonny PalmerHOST
It sure was.
J
12:34Jonny PalmerHOST
And Brendan Hartley was facing oncoming traffic briefly on the exit of turn number one.
J
12:39Jonny PalmerHOST
I didn't see another car in the near vicinity.
J
12:42Jonny PalmerHOST
He'd been attempting to close in.
J
12:46Jonny PalmerHOST
It was an Aston Martin.
J
12:47Jonny PalmerHOST
So as Brendan turned in, was that a rejoining Aston Martin? Yes, Harry Tinknell from the pit lane at 007.

Yes
B

... got it very loose indeed, and Brendan Hartley, no second invitation required, dives through in the Toyota.
J
26:16Jonny PalmerHOST
So these are both out laps, aren't they, for these cars, on, uh, tires that will be probably brand-new as well.
J
26:24Jonny PalmerHOST
Brendan Hartley actually not shown on brand-new tires, but I would imagine that he's been given a fresh set certainly on one side, and there's an element then of the tires building temperature.
J
26:35Jonny PalmerHOST
But Brendan Hartley is renowned for being able to turn the tires on very quickly indeed.
J
26:39Jonny PalmerHOST
For a long time, he was the chosen qualifying driver, although Ryo Hirakawa has generally taken that role up.
J
26:47Jonny PalmerHOST
We, we will not know who was due to qualify the Toyotas at their home race yesterday because, of course, that didn't, it didn't happen.
J
26:55Jonny PalmerHOST
But the hospitality is sold out without a question above the pit lane, viewing all of these Toyota stops.
