Brann Dailor

Second drummer in a row today who's a beast with no lessons.

Brann Dailor was in here from Mastodon.

Awesome.

Same thing.

All right, welcome to episode two of Jake's Weird Band today with Brann, the drummer from Mastodon.

You gotta say it like that, Mastodon.

It deserves to be said like that.

Still figuring out my process, my voice, trying to be present, trying to be locked in.

I'm, I'm trying to figure out my setup.

I got these, you know, little DJI mics that I take everywhere now for these interviews, and every time I test them, they work out great, except for this fucking time, where five minutes into the interview, I realize the light on my mic isn't on, and then 10 minutes into it, I realize the light on Brann's mic isn't on.

So while you listen to this, know that pretty much the entire interview, all I'm thinking is, "God fucking damn it.

They are either the thing you're playing with or the playing against, right? You go, "Okay, that's a jazz drummer.

I'll play the opposite, and that's how I'll do this." Um, you know, he also, like, uh, guys who were influenced by him, Brann Dailor of Mastodon, has said that, um, not only has his drumming been influential, but metal chords.

If you listen to especially like modern metal where you get these rich, complex chords, right? A lot of sevenths and minors and things.

That all, like a lot of them got that from Stevie.

Have I got an episode for you today.

It is the one and only Brann Dailor, drummer and vocalist of Mastodon.

Mastodon are back with their first album since the tragic death of Brent Hinds, Marrow Deep.

We talk about all the things to do with that album, the making of it, the recording, the nerdy stuff.

Like, is that even a thing? Like, do you know [laughs] what I mean? Like, mixed in with, with prog and, and that.

Like you said, Steve, Today is the Day, 'cause obviously Brann and, um, Bill were in Today is the Day for a while.

Mm.

So bringing that sort of i- in- influence into this.

[laughs]

[laughs] Yeah

... you go, like, and Br- Brann is still amazing, but you just go, poor old Brann.

He fucking, he gotta sing as well.
