But conscious music was popular back...

It was Public Enemy, it was, it was, uh, Brand Nubian, it was Poor Righteous Teachers, it was X-Clan, it was Ice Cube from, uh, Death Certificate.

It, I mean, we, we had, we had some, some, some, some brothers and sisters, Queen Latifah, they was representing the idea that the honorable Elijah Muhammad had taught.

So how did, uh, Muhammad Ali join the Nation? Guess what? He heard a song by Minister Louis Farrakhan, A White Man's Heaven Is a Black Man's Hell.

You know what I'm saying? Which the microphone was used for to express would fight the power.

Public, you know, Karis One, X-Clan, Brand Nubians, Poor Righteous Teachers, Native Tongues, Queen Latifah, and the Ladies First.

All of that emerged Even NWA was straight out of Compton.

You know what I mean? So all of this gave a platform to the pain, the suffering, the struggle.

Uh-huh.

Brand Nubian or Poor Righteous Teachers?

[laughs]

And I already had in my re- kicking my Brand Nu- Brand Nubian-

Yeah

...

Brand Nubians, Sadat X-

But then we pivoted Uh, and the culture shifted, and the pendulum swung, and we kinda went from, uh, that, uh, that theological, you know, philosophical, ideological space to the world of materialism.

Yeah.

Because now we, we go from, uh, [laughs] Sadat X and the Brand Nubians to Biggie and Jay-Z.

Yes.

Now we're gonna go with you.

Brand Nubian.

Oh, that's right.

I mean, shit, we used to kick it with Naughty, Brand Nubians, A Tribe Called Quest a lot back in the day.

All the GOATs right there.

You know what I'm saying?

All right, my bad.
