U.S. Steel is seeking an air permit for a new hot strip mill, which shapes steel into long rolls of flat steel.

The company is planning to build the mill at its Edgar Thompson plant in Braddock, near Pittsburgh.

The Allegheny Front's Reid Frazier attended a public hearing about the permit held by the Allegheny County Health Department.

The hot strip mill would replace an aging operation at the company's Irvin plant in nearby West Mifflin.

The project will lower U.S. Steel's overall pollution in Allegheny County, but it moves emissions from West Mifflin to Braddock, an environmental justice community with some of the highest pollution levels in the state.

Braddock Councilwoman Patricia Kelly, who came to the hearing, said she was disappointed the county is considering the permit.

Investigators say the district's assistant superintendent found 58-year-old Tammy White with the device that later tested positive for marijuana.

U.S. Steel's Board of Directors has authorized an investment of nearly $3 billion to build a state-of-the-art hot strip mill in the Edgar Thompson plant at the Mon Valley Works in Braddock.

The new mill will replace an aging facility at the Irvin plant to boost efficiency and product quality.

But I think Europe was probably the last, like, full, like, two, three-week tour we did, actually.

Um, and then the drummer moved to Braddock, Pennsylvania, and he started doing, uh, Hounds of Hate and, uh...

Oh, man, Cream.

The other band-

He went to the Harvard School of Government.

He ran for mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania.

Ever heard of it? Town of almost 3,000.

He, to some extent, put it on the map by dint of his personalities.

... would evoke sympathy?

I just have always run on what I believe and know to be true, that if we don't provide as level a playing field as we can, if we don't provide an opportunity for a second chance, if we don't provide investments and resources for these communities, these families, and these regions, then of course they're gonna continue to generate the kind of tragic outcomes that so often make the news and create all of these terrible trajectories for, for towns and regions.

And, and that's the way I wanted to spend the rest of my life, figuring out what that was, and that's what brought me to Braddock 20 years ago this year, is to work in a way that was somehow to synthesize, you know, whether it's business, social work, and, and public policy into something meaningful, uh, in terms of my career.

And, and I like to think I've, I've done that, and, and this is just the latest evolution of it.

yeah um so all right they arrive in pittsburgh and he's met by um kuda which is uh an older cousin of his and they have to take a second train out to Braddock, Pennsylvania, which I'm assuming is like out in the hinterlands there, like a little bit outside the city.

Yeah.

Believe it or not, it's what Fetterman did in Braddock, Pennsylvania.

What he did was he bought up a town and then put $2,000 houses for sale.

And everybody from the colleges around went.

was more like opioids, right? They couldn't turn down that offer.

So just to let

you know, Braddock would be like Bay Ridge.
