It's a very up song.
JeremyHOST
6:40
She's done a lot of great things with, what was it, Boy Genius a few years ago and her own projects.
JeremyHOST
6:45
Unfortunately, though, when the album came out, my wife and I were like, So I've seen a lot of positive reviews of the album and that Lost Boys is like,

This was at the Blue Room this week by surprise.
Rachel IacovoneHOST
20:31
Julian Baker, if you guys are familiar with this artist, I will say usually in connection to Phoebe Bridgers and actually her girlfriend, Lucy Dacus and Boy Genius.
Rachel IacovoneHOST
20:40
If you've not been to the Blue Room, you know, it's a much smaller venue.
Rachel IacovoneHOST
20:43
So I think it was a pretty intimate show.
PaigeHOST
29:47
They're not, but that's what I think differentiates her because it's like she has her little baddie persona going on.
PaigeHOST
29:52
Like, if she were singing Superstar looking like Phoebe Bridgers looking like a member of Boy Genius, I'd be like, I'm not buying it.
PaigeHOST
29:58
So it's like she needed that fucking... that pink bust down to her ankles.

A review of the new album Lost Weekend by Phoebe Bridges, one of the most preeminent younger singer-songwriters in America from Pasadena, California, and has been spare with her solo albums.
Julian BrownHOST

So we got Stranger in the Alps, in 2017, and Punisher in 2020, and now Lost Weekend in 2026, but it kind of feels like she's been everywhere, but actually quite slow, you know, three albums over 10 years, I've got to be honest, I don't know much about Phoebe Bridges, but when I reviewed the Boy Genius album a couple of years back I said that I thought it was good but one voice and lyrics and songwriting stood out, and I wondered in that review if it was Phoebe Bridges, and I would say that's definitely the case.
Julian BrownHOST
1:07
The other thing I would say is that modern music criticism is probably an idea with regards to bumping up female pop and R&B and songwriters, solo acts mainly, where often fairly average stuff gets... put as album of the year material and that's been going on for a long time but phoebe bridges is probably the biggest catnip for these people certainly amongst white singers anyway so lost weekend's come out and it's got predictably insane level reviews of a magnitude where you think that people like pitchfork have probably anointed it as their album of the year But I'm always fair.
Julian BrownHOST

So let's have a look through.
Julian BrownHOST
2:02
And I haven't heard her previous two albums.
Julian BrownHOST
2:05
The only one I've really heard is the Boy Genius album, which I gave, I think, a 7.5 out of 10 to.
Julian BrownHOST
2:11
I thought that a third of the tracks were outstanding and the rest were fairly middling.
Julian BrownHOST
2:17
Anyway, this one starts with the outside, which is sort of like a hymnal opener that gets actually really quite epic.
Lucy HuxleyHOST

Um, there was these two people in my early twenties and then one of them was Julian Baker, If you don't know who Julian Baker is, she's a musician.
Lucy HuxleyHOST
16:47
I developed a massive crush on her in like 2023 when Boy Genius was having their moment.

First of all, where do you land with Phoebe Bridgers?
Vanessa Roulston MooneyGUEST
5:57
I think like everyone, I did have a real phase a few years ago whenever Boy Genius kind of came back and everyone was in love with her and I did go to see Boy Genius.
Vanessa Roulston MooneyGUEST
6:05
And don't get me wrong, I still like her music, but there was something then I kind of went off of her a little bit.
Vanessa Roulston MooneyGUEST
6:09
I think maybe I'd had my Phoebe Bridgers fill, to be honest.
Vanessa Roulston MooneyGUEST
6:12
Maybe I'd had a bit too much.
Vanessa Roulston MooneyGUEST
6:15
But the album... has kind of made me fall back in love with it again i think i kind of forgot like her music is just so there really isn't anyone else doing it in the same way that she does it and i think you could probably even extend that to boy genius there is just something about it that is slightly different to similar acts i don't know is it like a relatability kind of thing i think she's quite transparent in her lyrics which is a nice feature yeah
Niall ByrneHOST
6:37
i mean i was kind of wondering like is is it listening to it again this week and the last few days you know third solo album first in six years so obviously like the follow-up to Punisher a lot has happened since then and in her life a lot has happened you know I mean you mentioned the Boy Genius thing obviously there's the whole Paul Mescal of it all you know there's there's other parts to there's this record um I think what I do like about it and what I like about it a lot is the kind of sonic imprint it has it has this kind of very ambitious sound to it now I guess when I was listening back to it today I was like okay it's co-produced with Jack Ganteloff usually for me okay I could take it or leave it but and Alex G as well a lot of collaborators in there as well Caroline Shaw does some strings and stuff like that there's a lot of beautiful strings in there a lot of really lovely touches lovely choral bits that really you know and i think with the fact that she did the pre-release album listening stuff in planetariums there's something where she's trying to pitch this album into this kind of yeah cosmic universe this kind of life as a cosmic thing you know she talks about her dad they were estranged and they reconnected and he died recently there's songs about that the song's about to break up presumably to Paula Meskel and you know her dad is actually on one of the songs Never Going Back as well and then there's a new love as well which you know there's a lot of giddy kind of feelings and lyrics in there and you're right she's kind of She's kind of baldly playing about those things.
Niall ByrneHOST

And in a way, there's something very similar to what she does that is similar to a Taylor Swift in a way.
