It just makes it normal that they see the world the way they do because of those life experiences.

So that beautiful song we just heard now is Both Sides Now, performed by Beth Riordan.

It was actually recorded at my book launch for The Holy and the Broken in Melbourne back in January 25.

And it's one of my favourite songs.

I was going left, right, left, right, because they were making me feel uncomfortable and they brought in facts and evidence and spoke in a way that really challenged a certain bias or preconceived notion I had about a certain political conflict or a social issue.

And I kind of miss that in our world.

I miss the beauty of people that can see both sides now.

What's a song that represents your love of Joni?

Joni Mitchell's 2000 version of Both Sides Now arranged by Vince Mendoza is godly.

It's just breathtaking.

Her lyrics take on a whole other meaning with the voice being dropped after years of smoking and living.

She talks about sunlight coming through windows like butterscotch and things like that, and I always used to play Joni Mitchell when I was about to go into the medical school for an exam, and somehow it just sort of calmed me down.

So I chose, um, Both Sides Now from Joni Mitchell, just reminding me of those happy days as a medical student.

From give and take, and still somehow it's love's illusions I require.

I really don't know love at all.

So Pamela Shaw, you mentioned a love of Gilbert and Sullivan, and I think it was that that clinched the deal for your place at Newcastle University, wasn't it?

Yes.

She was sitting.

She had a cane, and she sang Both Sides Now.

There was not a dry eye in the [laughs] house.

It still moves me now.

She certainly did mine.

She and I worked on, on Both Sides Now, which was on her, one of her albums.

W- so sh- I had a duet with her a couple of times.

She recorded a song of mine called The Fisherman's Song, and I was so honored that she would record one of mine.
