Tim Zhu's journey to the CFO office of the Boston Red Sox did not begin in accounting.

He studied mechanical engineering at MIT, worked as a management consultant with Bain, and then made what he calls a career one-eighty by becoming an eighth-grade math teacher in the Boston Public Schools.

Between his third and fourth years of teaching, Zhu wondered whether he might spend the summer working as an unpaid intern for the Red Sox.

I'm born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts.

I'm an educator for Boston Public Schools and a proud owner of Yo Soy Customs, where we focus on designing apparel and custom sneakers.

I understand that you grew up in Puerto Rican communities here in Boston.

What role did storytelling play in your upbringing?

But there's also a lane for education.

We have a couple that have theater backgrounds and actually one came right out of Boston Public Schools.

and uh and she's doing absolutely fantastic so i think there's there's to your point there's a lot of different profiles but it's uh you know it comes down to that that personality that that you know is not afraid to hustle and build a business and it's it can be um it can be really frustrating and hard for those that that don't have that experience in the early days because You know, it is a heavy sales role to begin with.

And once they get the classes going, and they're teaching classes, and they're building the relationships, the business really will grow, you know, kind of on its own.

[laughs] So for those of you who don't know, my guest a little while ago was on talking about stadium funding, mostly about Gillette.
