Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area

Well, the timing's good, because I was actually in downtown Boston yesterday, which doesn't happen that often, but it was Labor Day, and my family took the ferry to Spectacle Island, which I had never done before.

I'd never been to any of the Boston Harbor Islands, but we got off at South Station and then walked over to Long Wharf.

So we had a little peek at Government Center on our walk.

Downtown Boston's weird.

But it's now part of the National Park Service.

The Boston Harbor Islands National Park owns that lighthouse.

Oh, so they maintain it.

Good for them.

I lived in Winthrop for 15 years, but even before that I fell in love with Boston Harbor and its islands.

I was visiting the islands as early as the mid-1970s, and I took a walking tour of Fort Warren and the harbor with Edward Rowe Snow in 1979.

I ended up helping with tours at Boston Light in the 80s, and I was on the board of directors of the Friends of the Boston Harbor Islands for a while.

So I share Ed's love for Boston Harbor.
