Bordentown, as you can see by looking on your map, if you have not hidden them all away for the holidays, is about seven miles south of Trenton, where 1,500 Hessians and a troop of British light horse were holding the town.

Thus you see that the British in force were between Washington's army and Bordentown.

Besides which, there were some British and Hessian troops in the very town.

All this seriously interfered with Captain Tracy's going home to eat his Christmas dinner with his wife and children.

The legend says Commodore Stephen Decatur, the naval hero, was testing cannonballs at the Hanover Iron Furnace in the early 1800s when a winged creature crossed overhead and that he put a cannonball through it, cleaned through, and it kept flying.

The legend also says Joseph Bonaparte, the former King of Spain and Napoleon's older brother, who really did live in exile at Bordentown, New Jersey, saw the creature while hunting his estate around 1820, and that it started with strange two-footed tracks in the snow.

Neither story comes with a document attached.

Both men were real, both were in those places, and what they did or didn't see went unrecorded at the time.
