This is the legend of the Boo Hag.

Now, the Boo Hag is not a simple spirit.

She's a terrifying, skinless witch, a boogeyman of the highest order.

By day, she appears to be a normal person, maybe one of your neighbors.

Now reduced to a raw, red muscle and sinew form, she is a horrifying sight, small and nimble.

She flies out into the night, small enough to slip through any keyhole or even a crack in the wall, in search of a victim.

The Boo Hag is what's termed a psychic vampire.

A boo hag is a creature of Gullah Geechee folklore, kind of oral roots that came from African spiritual traditions carried across the Atlantic by enslaved Africans.

But the Gullah Geechee people in the Low Country and the Sea Islands of South Carolina and some in Georgia have a unique version of this creature.

The boo hag is usually described as a beautiful woman, but underneath... a monster.

At night, she peels off or unzips her skin and goes hunting as this reddish skinless creature.

She slips into people's homes while they're sleeping, climbs on top of them, and rides them into the night like a horse.

And then once again, you back up, go to throw your shoulder into the door and the door opens itself.

As I am, I'm going to shout as loud as I can.
