Bok choy

So there's quite a few, you know, people are familiar with, let's say, Napa cabbage, which is a little bit different than the European traditional large head cabbage.

So you've got your Chinese cabbages and then you'll kind of you can learn or, you know, Figure out how you want to grow things like bok choy or tatsoi or the Shanghai choy.

Those are all different sort of sizes and shapes.

And then you get into like the Chinese broccoli that has that sort of larger stem with no florets.

So my culture card is anti-bok choy movement.

So I have this grievance is like how everyone, like they just put bok choy on a plate and they say it's Asian inspired.

So they make miso salmon, they put a bok choy, congratulations, you've just rolled 48 countries into one.

And my point is, it's like the equivalent of putting a conical hat on top of bok choy and say, there you go, Asia.

It's like, no.

No, we can't do that because we want to liberate bok choy.

Like bok choy is not about, I don't hate bok choy, don't get me wrong.

We could talk about cabbage, and I'm thinking, well, how about Chinese cabbage? It's so tasty, and it, too, i- is very pretty.

And then of, of the Chinese cabbages, you got bok choy and pak choi and joy choy.

It's, uh, a lot of varieties out there.

Oh, boy [laughs].

Yeah, and actually, we grew one at the Fair Oaks Horticulture Center last year, uh, I think we're growing it again this year, that happens to be an All-America selection.

It, uh, called Asian Delight pak choi, and it was a quick grower, and they were mini head.

So some of the pak chois and bok choy can get pretty tall.

This was like six inches tall, and we harvested the whole head, and it grew quickly, and it didn't have a lot of pest problems like some of the other brassicas, and that might have been because it was such a quick grower.

So there's beans, pole beans.

next to bok choy.

Bok choy is pretty small.

Pulled beans grow real tall.

So that's a good reminder when you're planting things so that you don't accidentally make that mistake.

And they're looking good.

So those are kind of like replacing that set of cucumbers.

And I've got... like a dozen jars of pickles in my fridge i don't know what to do with the rest of them so i'm giving them out to neighbors um uh this this bed here i need to update it but um my other son did plant a bunch of bean seeds and they have not come up yet and i don't think that they will um so we're gonna try probably planting with a different variety of bush beans just to see if we can get a quick crop in before fall hits um I was going to plant bok choy here next to the cabbage that's still growing, but I decided to do it in the green stalk instead just because it was easier to put it up there.
