Casey Stengel now is coming out of the Yankee dugout and making his way toward the mound.

Jim Coates and Bobby Shantz, we are told, have been throwing in the Yankee bullpen, and Stengel is on his way up to talk to Ralph Terry.

They tell a great story about, uh, one of Casey's conferences with a pitcher on the mound, uh, some years ago, a pitcher that evidently was being pummeled, uh, rather heavily and was losing by a lopsided score.

And, uh, when Stengel got to the mound, the pitcher turned to Stengel and said, "Well, why do I have to go out?" And Stengel pointed to the grandstands all around the ballpark and very softly replied, "Up there, people are beginning to talk." Well, the conference has been held on the mound, Stengel and Berra and Terry.
