Bobby Rydell

Uh, Bob, of course, coming off his successful co-hosting stint last night of, uh, Friday Night Videos.

Uh, next week Bob will be touring with Frankie Avalon, uh, Bobby Rydell, and, uh, Fabian.

All right, this 1986, uh, baseball season got underway last Monday in presidential fashion.

The traditional first pitch, a wild throw in Baltimore.

Philadelphia gave us the Cameo-Parkway family of labels, originally established by Cameo in 1956 with Parkway following in 1958.

The company had enormous American hits from artists such as Chubby Checker, Bobby Rydell, Dee Dee Sharp, The Orlons, and The Dovells.

But buried amongst the mainstream success were records that would later find a completely different audience on the Northern Soul scene.

Once my life was full of sorrow.

And imagine 1964, you know, in North America when the Beatles broke through.

At that point, it was like Elvis, Bobby V, Bobby Rydell, the Everly Brothers.

Like everyone was so clean cut.

Yeah.

And more and more, the guys I hung out with were into nothing but the hardcore blues, black American music.

Other groups in Tijuana would want to play Elvis Presley or Fabian or Bobby Rydell, that Dick Clark kind of stuff.

Yuck.

Even when songs by Pat Boone and Paul Anka, songs like Volare, were popular and played on the radio, we didn't want to touch that.

He's a good man, that David Kang.

On 96.5 Inner FM, let's hear from Bobby Rydell.

This is Swingin' School.

Check.

Chubby Checkers' The Twist was the latest dance craze, followed by The Stomp fad.

And The Twist Spectacular was a concert that actually toured Australia, headlined by Chubby Checker and supported by Del Shannon and Bobby Rydell.

If your name was Bobby Rydell, you could only be a pop star of the 50s and 60s.

It's a

great name, isn't it? Brilliant.

Well, he was...

Boy, back in the day, he was, like, um, Bobby Rydell.

He was-

Okay.

1966, I think, 1964, 1965, and 1966.

So the very young Ray Davies in all those cases, of which one band, well, one singer, Bobby Rydell, actually was quite popular.

And it was an attempt to get a hit by letting him do a song by Ray Davies that actually came out before the Kinks version on their third album, Controversy.

I'll explain later.

There's another one again this week.

Whereas we do know the Kinks version of When I See That Girl of Mine because it appeared on their third album, Controversy.

But as I mentioned, a month before that album came out, Bobby Rydell came out with the version we heard today from 64.

A lovely, lovely Kinks cover that sounds a bit more like the Everly Brothers than the Kinks version that they cut around the same time.
