Bobby Cox

But it's one thing.

Bobby Cox was the best at this, I think.

under when it came to scrutiny, he would never publicly crush his players, but his demand on the players was significant.

So you did it under cover.

But it's one thing.

Bobby Cox was the best at this, I think, at...

under when it came to scrutiny, he would never publicly crush his players, but his demand on the players was significant.

So you did it under cover.

Your pitching staff was just loaded.

Can you just share a little bit about the culture that you guys had in the Braves organization that, I mean, that Bobby Cox has done, you know, did such a good job with and had done such a good job with? What was it like being in that clubhouse? And what was the culture like? And how do you try to emulate that in any sort of leadership that you have in today's game?

Well, you know, obviously the day I got drafted and playing with an organization that was already, you know, already starting to win, you know, they were at their bottom of the barrel, like, you know, worst to first.

But the culture of being around, just I'll give you the first spring training I go to.

It's like I'm a prime example.

I give them examples.

I'm like, the one time I hit a ball off the fence and I thought it was a home run, and I only got a single, Bobby Cox took me out of the game.

I got...

Here's a 2-1 pitch, on the ground, base hit between the third baseman and the shortstop.

To Al Kaline, a hard ground ball between Bobby Cox and Gene Michael.

First base hit for Detroit, first hit of the game.

A two-out single by Kaline.

Mantle is deep at first base near the line.

Clark back on the edge of the outfield grass at second.

Giving cash, oh, at least 25 to 30 feet of that foul line is Bobby Cox at third and Michael shading toward second.

The outfield shifted hard to the right and deep.

Bill Robinson will be in right field, batting seventh.

At third base and batting eighth, Bobby Cox.

And Mel Stottlemyre will be pitching and batting ninth.

For the Boston Red Sox, it'll be Mike Andrews leading off and playing second base.

One bounce to your strength key.

Done with runners at first and second.

Here's Bobby Cox.

Bobby batting 230, 14 doubles and triples, seven homers, 40 RBIs.

Defensively for the Yankees, Tommy Tresh in left field, Roy White in center field, and Andy Kosko in right.

Around the infield, Bobby Cox at third base, Gene Michael at shortstop, Horace Clark at second base, Mickey Mantle at first.

Jake Gibbs does the catching.

Fred Talbot making his fifth appearance and his fourth start, his first against the White Sox this year.

There's ball four and he walks Gibbs.

Jake Trotz on four pitches.

And Bobby Cox comes on.

Cox hitting 111, went 0 for 3 last night.

John Moorhead gives up his first baserunner.

And Bobby Cox will now come out and bat for Jack Akers.

Eighth walk allowed by Kansas City Pitching.

Cox is hitting 182.

He played a fine ball game for the Royals.

But unfortunately, for himself and for his team, diving for the ball, he had it in his glove, but just couldn't hold it.

And Bobby Cox wins it for the Yankees with a double, delivering Gibbs from first.

So, Jerry, that's it.

On this day in sports history, October the 28th, earlier this year in May, we lost a baseball legend in Bobby Cox, the great manager of the Atlanta Braves.

And on this day in sports history, October 28th, he won his lone World Series championship as a manager.

Left center field.

Then the playoffs got canceled when they could have been on their way to another championship.

but they won that World Series on this day in 1995.

Tommy Glavin, the MVP, and Bobby Cox got his second World Series championship.

His first was as a first base coach with the Yankees, but his only World Series as a manager on this day in sports.
