There was a lot of like wounds that I had from that, and I left.

After I graduated from Bob Jones University in 2004 with a degree in Bible, I ended up in this more mainstream conservative evangelical, like Calvinist type world, um-

And then here are a few examples of spiral-based curriculum.

We have Abeka, Bob Jones University, Saxon Math, Switched on Schoolhouse, and Horizons.

So these are the curriculum that I'm sharing with you today.

There are certainly others.

And he now is be able to take all of this exoskeleton and make it part of the internal skeleton.

But the thing I want to ask you just quickly before that, because you mentioned it in passing, I knew this story, but really was so glad that you gave it some space in here, which is like the Bob Jones University story.

Because it is the thing that almost no people, certainly people, you know, children like you, young people really appreciate, which is like, everyone just assumes that the evangelical right, the Christian right gets motivated by Roe.

No, they get motivated by the collision of race and money.

And even Reagan doesn't have, in the 70s, the oppositional position that he will subsequently one day take as he is president.

It's they're looking for the issue that's going to get galvanize the movement and they get it handed to them on a silver platter with the Bob Jones case.

Bob Jones University is a southern segregationist university in the south.

And I've said that Bob Jones is a southern segregationist university.

MacDonald, with your former Baptist background, what broke your confidence in more fundamentalist readings of the Bible?

It became very important to me when I witnessed how my university, which was an evangelical school, Bob Jones University, treated the death of Martin Luther King Jr.

When it was announced in a public assembly that he had been killed, the president of the school stood before the faculty and the students and said, Martin Luther King Jr. has just been killed in Memphis, Tennessee.

The president has asked us to fly the flag at half mast.

As they're forming this kind of new right coalition in the Reagan 80s, the catalytic element that kind of sets the hearts afire is the Bob Jones case, which works.

Bob Jones University works its way up to the Supreme Court.

Like we think of abortion as the

quickly remind people about the Bob Jones thing.

So we think of abortion as sort of the Rosetta Stone for how Christian evangelicals come to the right-wing movement, but it's actually desegregation.

Bob Jones University is a segregated academy.

It's a segregationist academy in the 1970s in South Carolina, and it's about to lose its tax exemption because it's... its admissions policy flies in the face of federal law, civil rights law.

You can't have a racist admissions policy and then get tax breaks for tuition and donations because you are breaking the law.

It's the greatest united because it is through the cross that we are redeemed and we have the opportunity to become one.

Of course, it unites as enemies against, that's why I say the Catholic Church is strangest of bedfellows, and we could talk about it perhaps another time, but you look at all those things, the communists, Planned Parenthood, the Nazis, people who might not have things in common, Bob Jones University, although they've gotten a little softer, but the The historically anti-Catholic Church is the tool of Satan.

And a rather eclectic group, the ACLU, opposed the Catholic Church.

You see this eclectic group come against the Church, and it is a backhanded compliment.

It was such a good model that it even migrated to higher education.

So Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, basically operated as the higher education analog of a seg academy.

You love to see it.

All right.

So by the 1970s, the IRS get hip to the fact that money is fungible, and they're basically subsidizing discrimination.

And so they decide that private schools with racially discriminatory policies will not qualify as tax-exempt charitable organizations under Section 501[c][3] of the Internal Revenue Code.

In 1971, just a year after these IRS regs took effect, Bob Jones University, lo and behold, began admitting Black students, but only if those Black students were already married to someone of their own race.

Unmarried Black applicants were still rejected and not admitted to Bob Jones.
