And without that native plant nursery, without those automatic traps, Then our ambitions to gradually join up Motopahoe and Amaui so that we have predator control active across the whole peninsula.

And then to extend our trap network around Bluff Harbour and into the Aura Waituna wetland.

And those are important ambitions because the Aoyatuna wetland is an internationally significant wetland and is almost entirely absent of any predator control.

And we know that the bittern that are still present there are clinging on.

My team's on the ferry just leaving Bluff to Rakiura.

We've got our two southern right whale behavioral ecologists in Bluff, and then we've got the whales swimming past Bluff Harbour heading towards the Catlins.

So we wait for the team to land.

As soon as they get off the real NZ ferry, they get onto the dock boat with all the gear, and then we head straight back across the Fobo Strait.

It's lucky none of them get seasick because this is their second trip of the day.

We shoot over to Bluff Harbour, we pick up our two southern right whale behavioural ecologists, which were sort of the key to success in this story, because we didn't have the experience with these whales to be able to predict what they were going to do.

And they really filled that knowledge gap for us.
