To continue a little bit further with the story of Cassandra Wilson, In 1993 she signed with Blue Note and in fact that album Blue Light Till Dawn was her first release on Blue Note.

She broadened her appeal hugely with the first couple of albums that she made for Blue Note and crossed over quite successfully to audiences outside of jazz.

And the lead vocabulary on top has a name too, the pentatonic box.

Blues and blues, rock lead guitar, mostly lives in the minor pentatonic scale, a five note scale, plus that one extra flatted fifth blue note that gives it the ache.

Guitar players learn it as a shape, a box on the neck.

And once your hand knows that box, you can improvise a solo over any 12 bar blues in that key.

Clapton cranked it into a Marshall and invented the blues rock roar.

And Hendrix showed it could make sounds no one had ever dreamed of.

And under every bit of it, still, is the blues, i.e. the 12-bar, the blue notes, the call and response, a voice singing, and the guitar answering.

Next time the vocal drops out and the guitar steps up to take a solo, you'll know exactly what you're hearing.

And his name was George Benson, right? This is 1971.

And George talked about, during the Q&A, George talked about this thing called the Blue Note.

We've heard of the jazz club called the Blue Note.

We've heard of the group Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes.

But George said during his talk, that he talked about what the blue note was.

George said, George Benson said that they were performing in Paris.

And during the break in one of the sets, this guy in the audience had come to members of the group and was telling them how much he appreciated their music.

He was a musician and he'd come to listen to them over the course of several nights.

Kiefer is building his rep more and more and more, and I saw him playing live with cartoons at the Jazz Cafe not that long ago.

This is the lead single from Memory Bomb for Blue Note and as I said it actually features on this track cartoons but also has Tony Stone, Flatbush Zombies and Eric the Architect.

And after that we moved into Marcus D's Substantial and Pop-A-Loy featuring Blue, the track was called Audio Sunshine.

I was obsessed with their first album, combining modern jazz, fusion, electronic, hip hop, and that kind of virtuoso musicianship into that uniquely futuristic sound of theirs.

The new album's balancing orchestral ambition with the duo's trademark rhythmic complexity and really playful musical personality.
