Blowing Rock

The best documented of the bunch and the one that got the widest circulation in its day came out of a valley in western North Carolina in the last month of eighteen seventy-seven.

The Globe is a long, deep valley in Caldwell County, north of Lenoir, where I live now, running up toward the Blue Ridge escarpment below Blowing Rock.

Johns River runs through it.

In eighteen seventy-seven, it was about as remote as settled country in North Carolina got.

A few farms strung along the river bottom, steep mountains on both sides timbered to the top, with the Blue Ridge standing up like a wall at the head of the valley.

The road in was a wagon track that washed out every spring.

Blowing Rock, up on top, was a summer resort for people from the flatlands, and in December, it was mostly empty.

The valley was hunting country—bear, deer, turkey—and the men who lived there knew every animal in it.

I'd gotten an opportunity to go speak up in North Carolina at Blowing Rock, and I'd done a youth event there.

Wow.

And so I'd gotten to taste my first snow skiing, as sad as that snow skiing is.

In the mountains, a range of temperatures.

Upper 70s in Blowing Rock.

86 in Asheville.

87, Bryson City.

I did that for many years.

when it was called the Summer Institute when Andrew led that in Blowing Rock.

And then recently,

in more recent years, meaning like 2020, a long time,

David's been doing it as a close roots retreat.

And I would go to Blowing Rock every year.

But this year I'm coming back to the Cotswolds with them.

Wow.

I chased somebody out in the parking lot in Blowing Rock in the late 90s.

A bunch of people came in.

Run me to death.

So you see them clustered in a section of Western North Carolina that is between Asheville and, say, Hickory.

You see them clustered in a section that is north of Hickory Around Boone and Jefferson and West Jefferson and Blowing Rock, that is largely a pretty rural area and is also where like the Blue Ridge Parkway is.

You see them clustered around the URIs, for instance, and like between Pittsburgh and Sanford and Stanley County and the URIs and Asheboro.

where there's large rural sections of North Carolina that don't have a ton of people in them.

And then that marginal risk looks like it slides a little bit further to the south.

So kind of slicing from the mountains from Boone and Blowing Rock, maybe just missing Charlotte, but let's call it within the margin of error through the central part and out to the coast.

So a lot of North Carolina on Friday has some risk of seeing storms.

So stay weather aware for those.

They searched the balance of the day, but nothing could be seen of the object of their pursuit.

During the search, they ascended the crags of Blowing Rock and discovered a small cave in which was found a bed of leaves and many bones resembling those of a possum.

It is supposed this cave has offered this wild man a home for many years.

Our correspondent describes the wild man as being about six feet five inches tall, with broad shoulders and long apish arms, smooth face and funnel-shaped head.

We have a piece of video that we'll play for folks in just a moment, but maybe just set the stage for folks who don't know the difference between what Asheville saw versus what Charlotte saw.

And when I say Charlotte, I mean Charlotte, I mean Hickory, I mean Boone and Blowing Rock, that kind of whole slice of the Carolina.
