Blood libel

Some say it represents the Greek god Kronos, who devoured his own children.

Others believe it was connected to medieval anti-Semitic blood libel imagery.

Another explanation says it was simply a boogeyman designed to frighten children into behaving.

But there is something about this statue that is often treated almost as decoration, those bears beneath it.

Kronos or Saturn.

The figure may represent Kronos or Roman Saturn, devouring his children because he feared being overthrown.

It's also... anti-Jewish blood libel imagery, the pointed hat could also resemble the juggernaut, which has produced the theory that the figure represents a Jew murdering and eating Christian children.

For the benefit of anyone listening, the blood libel began 800, 900 years ago in medieval Christianity with the assertion made that Jews killed Christian children to use their blood to mix in the matzah and that would set off pogroms.

And that kept going and then was aided by the protocols of the elder of Zion from the czars.
