And, you know, GMT didn't want to publish Hunt for Blackbeard because it didn't have solo roles.

This might be controversial.

I did follow him into Our Flag Means Death, the pirate TV show, which stars Rhys Davies and Taika Waititi.

Taika Waititi plays Blackbeard in that movie.

But yeah, you'll fall like Michael Scott level of comedic character.

He's so, so good.

And the people are nice.

And yeah, Blackbeard stomping grounds, you know, those are that's it's a lot of history.

That's the other thing.

The West has a lot of

Benjamin Hornigold was there.

The man history remembers as Blackbeard, Edward Teach or Thatch, depending on which record you consult, was there.

And so was Anne Bonny, one of the most famous female pirates in the historical record, whose story we will return to in a later segment because it deserves that space.

Nassau in this period was not merely a place where pirates stopped, it was a place where they governed themselves.

They gave us, across three centuries of distance, a glimpse of what specific individuals chose to carry on their skin.

And from those glimpses, carefully read, carefully considered, a great deal can be understood.

Let us meet some of them, Edward Teach Blackbeard.

There is perhaps no pirate in the entire historical record more written about, more mythologized, more cinematically reimagined than Edward Teach.

Pirates.

and the type of pirates that they depict in the movie are not really the type of pirates you're gonna find in the Pacific Northwest, right? But when you think of pirates, you think Caribbean pirates, right? You're thinking Blackbeard, And you're thinking of rum runners and that kind of pirating.

That's not what you get in the Pacific Northwest.

But because that's the story of Goonies, that's what they depict in it.

And then you have this classic 1985 movie that we still watch to this day.

I mean, we're dressing up as them for Halloween.

That's how much we love this movie, right? So yes, so 1693, this is the heyday of pirating, right? This is when you really think about it, right? It's all before America becomes America, right? Blackbeard, all this stuff is happening in the early 1700s, right? And so this is the time, but...

I mean, that kind of gives you more of a notorious pirate name.

On the other hand, I was actually checking timelines in preparation for this, and Edward Teach, otherwise known as Blackbeard, was active from 1716 to 1718.

Port Royal where a substantial portion of the first Pirates of the Caribbean film was set, was destroyed by an earthquake and tsunami in 1692, I think.
