Black Panther Party, Winston-Salem, North Carolina Chapter

He was also assigned to the personal aid of both David Hillard and Huey P. Newton.

In 1972, he was drafted to work in Bobby Seale's main campaign office in his run for mayor of Oakland, and he helped establish the Panthers Oakland Community School in 1973, which was actually the first charter school in Oakland.

And Billy X. Jennings has become an archivist of the Black Panther Party history.

He holds a large collection of photos, documents, and other archival material related to the Black Panther Party.

So when we started ethnic studies here in our higher educational levels across the country, ethnic studies was a new... was a new department, and they were hiring teachers and giving them teachers to teach it, right? So this is where I came in on organizing young people, starting a social program.

And then eventually, after Huey got out of jail in 1970, the Central Committee, which is the governing body of the Black Panther Party, moved me to Central Headquarters.

And that... move me to central headquarters kind of reflects on what i'm doing now because when i worked at central headquarters we had over 40 different chapters and branches in 30 different cities across the country so i got to know panthers from every chapter and branch right uh when it came to oakland for political education classes or to learn organizing skills i met them and knew know them so I've kept a lifelong relationship with many Panthers here and around the world.

Now, what I've been doing since 1995 is organizing with a group called It's About Time out of Sacramento, California.
