Billy Bones

Released in 1950, this film marks Disney's first fully live-action venture and it remains a timeless piece of adventure cinema.

The story follows young Jim Hawkins, played by Bobby Driscoll, who stumbles upon a treasure map left by the late Captain Billy Bones, played by Finley Currie.

This discovery sets off a thrilling journey to the Caribbean, where Jim, along with Squire Trelawney, played by Walter Fitzgerald, and Dr Livesey, played by Dennis Odea, embarks on a quest for pirate gold.

The film's heart lies in its characters, particularly the enigmatic Long John Silver, played by Robert Newton.

Hooks up with some pirates.

He has a map from Billy Bones, played by Billy Connolly, who I fucking love.

And

Billy Connolly is in the very start of this.

You're not seeing all of the paint and the crazy.

Right.

So Billy Bones, played by Bill Connolly, opens the film with, like, real dread.

I mean, he's ranting.

It was tattooed in several places.

Here's luck, a fair wind, and Billy Bones his fancy were very neatly and clearly executed on the forearm, and up near the shoulder there was a sketch of a gallows and a man hanging from it, done, as I thought, with great spirit.

Prophetic, said the doctor, touching this picture with his finger.

And now, Master Billy Bones, if that be your name, we'll have a look at the color of your blood.

Jim, he said, are you afraid of blood? "No, sir," said I.

"Well, then," said he, "you hold the basin." And with that he took his lancet and opened a vein.

The squire and I were both peering over his shoulder as he opened it, for Dr. Livesey had kindly motioned me to come round from the side table, where I had been eating, to enjoy the sport of the search.

On the first page there were only some scraps of writing, such as a man with a pen in his hand might make for idleness or practice.

And the good guys always win in the end, so there we go.

And there's a lot of fun... like i would say like i would call it like muppet comedy muppet humor in it where they break the fourth wall they make like sort of contemporary references to like other movies and historical figures and um so there's just like a lot of fun elements thrown in there so let's go ahead and share all right so here we have some human actors uh this is jim and then this is the old guy with the map his name is billy billy bones i think i

um but i grabbed this so that we can see jim's outfit mostly and he's like working at this inn um and i love this i might need to brighten this up when i post it but um i love this apron style where it's

it um but her dress is nice um it's got some fun pattern matching pattern mixing as well uh she's only like in this one scene she might be the only human woman who's in this movie i'm thinking

so that's also a shame because like this is the only representation of women besides miss piggy who's obviously great So here's just another full body shot of Billy Bones.

I just grabbed it so we could see him.

Lionel Barrymore played the mysterious, rum-soaked Billy Bones.

Which, yes, for anyone keeping track of Hollywood dynasties, that is Drew Barrymore's great-uncle.

It's top tier studio royalty all around.

Yeah.

And he was even nominated for Young Actor Awards for it.

Plus, they brought in the legendary Scottish comedian Billy Connolly to play Billy Bones and Jennifer Saunders as the innkeeper, Sarah Bluebridge.

Again, the Mu- the Muppets seemed to have cornered the market on screwball comedies, uh, into the '70 with their first movie.

And that's Billy Connolly there as, um [smacks lips] where is he? Uh, Billy Bones.

Well, and he's at a, at the tavern.

There's our ostensible hero, Kevin Bishop, as Jim Hawkins, a friendly orphan boy who's done a lot of work in England, but not much over here on this side.

And there is a group of pirates that come in and out.

There's this one particular pirate, Billy Bones, who ends up dying at this inn.

And Jim's father also dies at this inn, which is a life-changing moment obviously for him.

But when this pirate Billy Bones dies, Jim finds this treasure map.

And Jim's mother is very encouraging to Jim, saying, we need to get the money that is owed to us from these pirates.

So what happens is there are a few associates.

And something that happens offstage, but right at the beginning of the book, is his dad dies.

Yes.

At first we thought it was the want of company of his own kind that made him ask this question, but at last we began to see he was desirous to avoid them.

When a seaman put up the Admiral Benbow, and now and then some did, making by the coast-road for Bristol, he would look in at him through the curtained door before he entered the parlour, and he was always sure to be as silent as a mouse when any such was present.

For me, at least, there was no secret about the matter, for I was, in a way, a sharer in his alarms.

He had taken me aside one day, and promised me a silver fourpenny on the first of every month, if I would only keep my weather-eye open for a seafairy man with one leg, and let him know the moment he appeared.' Often enough, when the first of the month came round, and I applied to him for my wage, he would only blow through his nose at me, and stare me down.

He gave it me to Savannah, when he lay a-dying, like as if I was to now, you see." but you won't peach unless they got the black spot on me, or unless you see that black dog again, or a seafaring man with one leg, Jim, him above all.' "'But what is the black spot, Captain?' I asked.

"'That's a summons, mate.

I'll tell you if they get that, that you'll keep your weather eye open, Jim, and I'll share with you equals upon my honour.' He wondered a little longer, his voice growing weaker, but soon after I had given him his medicine, which he took like a child, with the remark, "'If ever a seaman wanted drugs, it's me.' He fell at last into a heavy, swoon-like sleep, in which I left him." What I should have done had all gone well I do not know.

Probably I should have told the whole story to the doctor, for I was in mortal fear lest the captain should repent of his confessions and make an end of me.
