Did you ever cite yourself in a paper? Do you write about women's sports and say, and I know that because I was
27:04
there.
27:06
Yes, I actually did read.
27:08
I had seven books in this.
27:10
The Inequality of Women's Sports is one of them, which I think is fantastic to even have that, right? Totally.
27:16
But I was reading a couple of the books.
27:20
they had it wrong actually because i was physically there you know i was physically there it's like oh i'm like oh my god what do i do i didn't do it i just like it wasn't right or maybe i wasn't right i go oh maybe was i not listening or was i not no i was there because on a couple things I had to do something and they
31:35
You know, I was wondering why you particularly wanted to make this book for kids and not for an adult audience.
59:58
So what was it about Lara and Deloitte that made you think these are the people that are going to help us build women's sports out?
60:05
Well, first of all, I had experience, you know, in Lara.
60:08
I've been in I've done appearances for Deloitte and had so much fun.
60:11
And Lara and I also spent time in Milan at the Winter Olympics.
60:15
So Lana and I, we tried to go to everything.
60:18
We were just exhausted.
60:19
Liberty Games, Sparks Game, you know, World Cup in Australia.

69:08
It's going to be who we are, how we are in our most defined ways.
41:31
What are your thoughts on the state of American tennis today?
41:35
We're not doing well.
41:37
We're not growing the game anymore like we need to.
41:39
The USTA, David Haggerty said at the annual meeting that We need to, we have an aging, we're kind of aging, and we need to get the young ones to play.
41:52
The reason I want kids to play, first of all, The life I've had through tennis, if you make it to a pro, is one of the greatest opportunities.
42:01
First of all, we're global.
42:03
Soccer is global.

13:33
Right.
13:34
And when things started to happen is when we started thinking, you know, everything I would talk about is we.
13:40
Like every single athlete, we're a team.
13:42
Right.
13:43
We are not.
13:44
It's not about I or me.
13:46
It's about we.
16:09
With that said, what advice would you give to young LGBTQ plus folk?
19:13
Yes.
19:14
Even today, I'm hoping before I'm out of here that the men and women associations will be together.
19:20
So they said no back then, but then we started Women's Professional Tennis, and then we started a tour.
19:26
And the tour told me, uh, they knew things were happening behind the scenes, and I, and I was trying to figure out who I am and what my sexuality was, and I, I really wasn't clear.
19:38
And they said, "Well, if you say one word, we won't have a tour." Well, that'll put the fear of God in me.
21:29
Safe, yes.
21:30
And when you do come out, the question I would ask is do you trust the people you're talking to? Like, I put the trust in the rest of the world basically when I came out 'cause I knew what I was doing.
21:43
You have to do it in good faith almost, just go for it.
46:37
And she's been telling my colleague Katya Adler why she initially wasn't able to complete her degree.
46:43
I had to quit college because that was my one opportunity to become number one in the world, and that's always a dream I'd had since I was 10.
46:51
And so, um, I accomplished that, but in the back of my mind, I kept thinking, "You know, I haven't finished college.
46:56
I should finish." So it's taken 61 years.
46:59
Everybody's teasing me.
47:00
And I want people to know that it's never too late, usually, if you can still think, you know?
Valeriya VetoshkinaSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
47:25
Tell us a little bit about that, because it was watched by 90 million viewers worldwide on TV.
47:32
What had happened in 1968, I got £750.
23:15
My colleague Katya Adler spoke to her and began by congratulating her on this achievement.
23:20
Well, thank you so much, Katya.
23:22
I'm still, um, trying to wrap my arms around everything because I had so many people respond.
23:28
I cannot tell you.
23:29
Many more than I...
23:30
when I won Wimbledon.
23:31
Of course, that was in the old days.
Katya Adler
Katya AdlerCORRESPONDENT
23:44
Can you tell us why was it that you weren't able to, to complete your degree sixty-five years ago?
22:20
"We, we don't want to hear all this."
22:21
They'd tell me, "Be quiet.
22:21
Be quiet.
22:22
You're a girl, be quiet.
22:23
Don't rock the boat.
22:24
Just be happy that you have this opportunity." Of course, I'm thinking, "It's not the road I'm gonna take."
23:40
King's wish today? To build upon a more inclusive America
23:45
Every time I talk to somebody that's just gotten here, I go, "Why'd you come here?" Every time it's just about the same answer: "I wanted to make a better life for my family." So something about us is the land of opportunity, and I want us to keep it that way.
