Bill McKibbenSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
30:48
That should tell you what you need to know.
Amy GoodmanSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
30:51
And Bill McKibben, could you say something about the progress that the divestment movement has made and why you think divestment is likely to be a more successful strategy with Exxon and getting them to change their climate policy?
Bill McKibbenSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
31:08
Well, I think that the real point of the divestment movement has been to kind of withdraw the social license from these fossil fuel companies and thereby reduce their political power the reason we haven't gotten anywhere on climate change for the 40 years that we've known about it is precisely because these guys wield so much political power i mean look exxon knew perfectly well that what Anna's grandfather was saying was correct.
Bill McKibbenSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
31:37
They set to work climate-proofing all their own drilling rigs and other installations to account for the sea level rise they now knew was coming.
Leah C. StokesGUEST
62:19
But that campaign really looked at all the coal plants across the country and all the decision-making bodies, which are often public utility commissions, and then just worked it year after year through a whole network of activists.
Leah C. StokesGUEST
62:31
I'll also say that Third Act has been working on this more in these days too, which is an amazing organization that Bill McKibben founded.
Leah C. StokesGUEST
62:38
And so, yeah, like plugging into Sierra Club campaigns, plugging into Third Act, these are great ways to get involved.
Leah C. StokesGUEST
62:44
And imagine if you shut down a coal plant.
Ayana Elizabeth JohnsonGUEST
32:18
Um, when you're thinking about your energy bills, um, when you're thinking about what jobs are available to you.
Ayana Elizabeth JohnsonGUEST
32:24
I mean, I recently learned from Bill McKibben, who's my new co-host for the What If We Get It Right? podcast, that there's more people who, in America, who work at Arby's than who work in the coal industry.
Chris HayesHOST
32:35
Mm.
Ayana Elizabeth JohnsonGUEST
32:35
Like, clean energy is where all the jobs are at, where all, they're all emerging, and a lot of those are actually in red states, but we're not talking about that in the ways we should be.
Diana Butler BassGUEST
12:48
Yeah.
Diana Butler BassGUEST
12:49
Um, Bill McKibben has them in his garage now.
Diana Butler BassGUEST
12:52
If you know Bill McKibben, the great environmentalist writer, when he heard that Ronald Reagan had taken down the panels that Jimmy Carter-
Kate BowlerHOST
12:57
[laughs] He put them in his garage.
Kate BowlerHOST
12:59
[laughs]
Diana Butler BassGUEST
12:59
Bill McKibben went and tracked them down, put them in his truck, took them up to Vermont, and has them in his garage.
Kate BowlerHOST
13:05
[laughs] That's amazing.
Kate BowlerHOST
13:05
Deep cut umbrage.

Sunlight has to travel 93 million miles to reach the Earth, but none of those miles go through the Strait of Hormuz.
Brad FriedmanHOST
0:55
Excellent point, Bill McKibben.
Brad FriedmanHOST
0:57
Could you get a little bit less of that sunlight to be traveling through to Southern California these days? This is your Green News report.
Sheryl CrowSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
1:09
I'm gonna soak up the sun.
Margery EaganHOST
4:30
Is it the f- certainly by the '70s, maybe even earlier.
Jim BraudeHOST
4:32
Bill McKibben said that, told us, the first person to tell us about a story in the LA Times-
Margery EaganHOST
4:37
Yeah
Jim BraudeHOST
4:37
... a few years ago, talking about how there were internal memos, not unlike what the cigarette companies had done years, decades ago-
Dominic BoyerHOST
13:07
We have on the podcast today an exciting return from dear old friend Leah Stokes, who back Back when we first met her was just a lovely assistant professor, just establishing herself.
Dominic BoyerHOST
13:19
And now she is a force of nature where you're going to see her out there giving talks, occupying stages with Bill McKibben and Naomi Klein and oh, oh, oh, oh, Ezra Klein.
Dominic BoyerHOST
13:30
Two Kleins, like every Klein in the world, right?
Cymene HoweHOST
13:34
Not Calvin Klein, but...

Leah StokesGUEST
67:44
However, sometimes.
Leah StokesGUEST
67:44
people do not actually read the book like when they're interviewing you, which is OK. It's just that I try to actually read the book.
Leah StokesGUEST
67:50
Like I interviewed Ezra Klein about abundance and I read the book and there's lots of interesting ideas there or Bill McKibben.
Leah StokesGUEST
67:55
You know, he has a new book.
Hrvoje MorićHOST
38:02
Um, I saw a clip the other day.
Hrvoje MorićHOST
38:03
Climate change activist Bill McKibben came out.
Hrvoje MorićHOST
38:06
Um, Chief Nerd cut the clip.
George OlsonGUEST
38:08
Mm.
Rowan DeanHOST
10:17
So Michael, to you, how serious is Penny Wong's lie, and should Penny Wong be apologizing?
Michael DanbyGUEST
10:23
Well, the authoritarians in Geneva hate it when, uh, uh, people like Natasha Hausdorfer make these kind of brief speeches.
Michael DanbyGUEST
10:31
I've done it too.
Michael DanbyGUEST
10:31
But, um, Penny Wong doesn't have the courage of her convictions to correct a mistake when she's obviously made one.
Miro WeinbergerGUEST
30:22
But it could.
Kevin EllisHOST
30:23
Well, Bill McKibben wrote a great book a few years ago called something, uh, about his experience in where he grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts.
Kevin EllisHOST

Kevin EllisHOST
