Bildungsroman

It's sort of a...

I guess you call it a Bildungsroman type of film.

And they're actually based on the memoirs of a Dutch writer where she lived this life, where she was very poor and had a large family and met a bunch of painters and then used that to kind of like move up social classes.

So that's the true story of Newdorf.

Anyway, that's my biggest gripe with the movie.

But I think a good kind of comparison is actually Barry Lyndon.

which is also another beautiful kind of Bildungsroman, which is also a bit satirical.

That one more centered on a man, but also beautiful, both beautiful films and like roguish heroes trying to figure it out and cut through class and try and game the system in a way.

Would it be a K? Would that G be a K or an NG?

And then, yeah, I loved, I loved, you know, the more the intimate relationship in that through like, this is actually, you know, exploring the intergenerational relationship between, you know, grandfather, father and son to, to simplify, um, Which, you know, AI, the movie, whatever, is like this robot's just on his own.

Like, he's on his own little, I guess, Bildungsroman-type journey, I think.

Like, coming of age, almost.

But, yeah, this is a lot different.

throughout the series.

And one clarification that I got from there, which given how much I said the word Bildungsroman repeatedly, and it is true that Giant's Bread is a Bildungsroman, aka like a coming of age novel.

but uh it is pointed out in that that it's actually more so a constable roman as in uh the subcategory of bill dung's roman which focuses on the protagonist's development into a mature artist and given that we're going to go on to speak about as we always do like who is mary west mccott what are these books maybe there's even a late a late entry to that contest that that they're her books about artists can

Oh, I thought it was sort of like a Bildungsroman.

What? A Bildungsroman.

What is that? You don't know what a Bildungsroman is? No, and the more you say it, the less I understand it.

Dealing with being a young man, but obviously it's not an adult novel any more than the Bildungsroman that I had to read in AP with it.

I think when I first learned this term was Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.

Holy cow, what a book.

should be.

And so for listeners, to remind them, a Bildungsroman means a kind of coming-of-age story.

And broadly speaking, before the latter half of the 20th century, you had a masculine version, which is typically a young man leaves home on a series of trials before making his way in the world, and usually finds a mentor to help guide him.

So you can think of any number of Charles Dickens novels, you can think of the adventures of Huckleberry Finn, you can think of The Deer Slayer by James Fenimore Cooper.

They are very different books, Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, although they do share some themes, an unnerving sexuality, a sense of gothic ominousness, interesting and qualified critiques of imperialism.

All of those are in both of these books, and I think they are similar books in that they kind of resist movie adaptations.

Really want to make about a pretty woman and all these like wan but gorgeous models get cast as Jane.

And that was kind of a critical conversation.

I thought I really wanted to like dig in and look at the place of this book in literary history and histories of like feminist novels in histories of like women's confrontations with imperialism.

there we are bildungs is sort of development or you can think of it as buildings but it's not quite the same it's How would you translate Bildungsroman? There's like just a straight up English translation of that, isn't there?

It's like education novel.

I mean, it's a coming of age story in English.
