In 1807, Manuel Liza led one of the first major American trading expeditions up the Missouri.

He eventually established Fort Raymond at the junction of the Yellowstone and Big Horn River, opening a permanent American trading presence deep inside the country the United States had only recently claimed.

The following year saw more expeditions, more boats, more traders, more goods, and more Americans attempting to push into the indigenous trade networks of the Missouri.

But there was a problem.

Now, Big Horn County Search and Rescue covers that western slope of the Bighorns.

B- but I imagine there's a point where you j- you don't turn around and go home when you get halfway into, up into the Bighorns for a rescue and you're like, "Well, that's Sheridan County's problem now." Um, it, it covers places where people are gonna get messed up and get lost, including, uh, the Big Horn River.

How many water rescues? My goodness.

So this is going to be the most serious part of the content that the Foul Hooked Whitey produces.

Currently, the Bighorn River in Thermopolis, Wyoming remains closed, voluntarily closed.

It's being guided a bit, no big deal.

But back in the autumn of 1823, a couple months after the Bear attack, Jim Bridger was with Andrew Henry and the other men of the company at the second location of Fort Henry.

And it's probably no coincidence that Henry chose to build his second fort at the junction of the Yellowstone and Bighorn Rivers, near the spot where he had worked for Manuel Lisa at Fort Raymond 15 years earlier.

The geography of the fur trade had not changed in that time, only the names had.
