Big Maybelle

A Louisiana boy named Jerry Lee Lewis hit the charts with a song called Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On on Sun Records, and it peaked at number three.

But Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On was released two years earlier in 1955 by Big Maybelle on the OK label.

Jerry Lee changed some of the lyrics and added his signature pumping piano, but let's hear Big Maybelle's original version now.

[singing] 21 drums and a old bass horn.

Somebody beating on a, a ding dong.

With soul, baby

Yeah, we're gonna have a whole lotta shaking going on tonight.

That was Big Maybelle with her original version of Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On.

and finally it seems no show of mine is complete without at least one tune from the queen of heartbreak elin jewel she normally records her own compositions but this is an album of covers of old-time blues tunes she released in twenty seventeen It's called Downhearted Blues, it is an absolute triumph, and why the town council of her hometown, Boise, in Idaho, haven't yet erected a golden statue of her in the town square, is frankly beyond me.

Anyway, we heard her scintillating version of the song Don't Leave Poor Me, originally recorded back in 1955. by the Tennessee blues singer Big May Bell.

Which brings to an end our time together tonight.

But we can do it again next week.
