One of our listeners said he loves the show with Nick Fraser about free jazz, which is something.
R
1:42Ralph Ben-MurgyHOST
It's not for everybody, but Nick did a great job selling it, and this guy wanted to get the playlist and dig a little deeper into that sort of thing.
R

Today I want to talk about Big Band.

Overwater Interviews - Danny Millar

And so I was a solid... horn section player but i could never do the stuff now that i look and all the cats are doing it in town or like on on those gigs that's not kind of my bag and yeah i just felt like yeah it just kind of something was pushing me in that direction basically so after that i started depping on a load of shows i did my first one was ghost on the tour And then periodically from there, I've just done a lot of depping.
D
8:57Danny MillerGUEST
I've done a lot of teaching as well as like writing and, and arranging for, for various things, whether that's like wind bands or big bands or like cruise ship stuff.
D
9:10Danny MillerGUEST
or like touring kind of one night things there's just been I've just kind of like had my fingers in a lot of pies which has been really fun for a long time what I love about what we do is like I can do lots of different things and my my weeks are never the same like it's it's not a boring gig it's because what one minute I'm playing on a show and then the next minute I'm writing music and then the next minute like i'm supervising something and and going down and just watching the show and noting the musicians that are on it and the next one i'm sat in front of a spreadsheet you know booking musicians for for wedding gigs or whatever it is so yeah it's been nice and varied
D
9:53Dan EzardHOST
I think I still get email reminders from that particular side hustle asking me to update my address or whatever it is.
D
11:28Danny MillerGUEST
And so that was a huge influence.
D
11:31Danny MillerGUEST
Anyway, I was writing a lot for that and writing a lot for the function band that I had.
D
11:34Danny MillerGUEST
But I've always loved playing in big bands.
D
11:37Danny MillerGUEST
That's been kind of the thing that for me has been... like a huge catalyst and and when i was in liverpool there's a huge gap in the market there for for big bands because there's just not many and lipper didn't have one and a lot of my writing when i was at uni was like was big band focused or jazz focus and i didn't have an outlet to have it played so it was like right let's start this band let's do a load of arranging and also it takes the pressure off you know having to write a load of music for what was like you know an everything orchestra kind of thing And yeah, so after that was just, it was very much like just a hobby kind of thing.

S

So that was Lester Young.
S
41:48Sid GribetzHOST
But during this period when he was a regular working member of a touring, performing b- big band, there are several instances in which he appears in small groups, uh, arising out of those situations, and we're gonna feature for the next segment of our show Lester Young in small groups in, uh, the late 1930s.
S
42:08Sid GribetzHOST
And the very first small group is a very significant matter, talking about Count Basie, and that is, yeah, Count Basie was signed up as he was making his fame and was about to leave Kansas City and become a national attraction.
S
42:22Sid GribetzHOST
He was signed up for a exclusive recording contract with Decca Records.

And, um, great trumpet player, had like great, um, great teachers and, you know, his, his uncle, um, [lips smack] uh, Uncle Tony, like this very Italian trumpet player in big bands, uh, also taught him and, um, and this guy Frank Del Russo who was like an adopted grandpa for us.
A
43:23Adam GautilleGUEST
And so anyways, I open this trumpet, I'm six, and I, I was like, okay there's like a mouthpiece there and a trumpet here and I just put it together.
