10 MINS LATER

Rob BlanchardGUEST

And having that understanding of how a municipal budget works, what's driving the cost there, is it health care, teacher salaries, is it bonding for new schools and infrastructure, is really an important sort of foundation.
Rob BlanchardGUEST
10:59
Because what the state does a lot of times is they'll create legislation that... you know, may have unintended consequences in some communities.
Rob BlanchardGUEST
11:08
And if you have a familiarity with the way town government functions, it allows you to understand, is this legislation going to achieve its intended result, or is it going to conflict with the way municipalities are either funded, whether it's a state budget, or are there sort of heavy-handed mandates that aren't going to be effective or maybe onerous to implement? And so I think when we have people that are town-minded at the state level, because some of these issues, while they are unique to some towns, affordability, for example, isn't, right? Utility prices are something on the minds of someone in Bethel, just as much as they are in Fairfield or property taxes.
Rob BlanchardGUEST
11:46
And so that is where having a statewide perspective is important, but really understanding the mechanics of local government is helpful, too.
