Nick GoldingHOST

GP will still be there in the background monitoring things, just making sure everything goes smoothly.
Nick GoldingHOST
27:22
Let's move this conversation on to Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton, because former Aston Martin strategist Ian, Bernie Collins, not Ian, Ian's not a former Aston Martin strategist.
Nick GoldingHOST
27:33
Bernie Collins has raised the point, as did Karun Chandhok of the XF1 driver, that You know, following Singapore and going into this weekend, there needs to be a, and I quote, difficult conversation between Lewis and Ferrari over just what's happening with the strategy, whether there is, you know, a breakdown in trust on either side.
Nick GoldingHOST
27:56
The fact we saw, as we've discussed in this podcast over the last couple of weeks, in Malaysia, Ferrari getting the strategy horribly wrong.
Nick GoldingHOST
28:03
And then in Singapore, Lewis getting the strategy horribly wrong by not listening to Ferrari.
Ian ParkesHOST
29:11
at least seem to have built a better rapport with this person over the course of this season.
Ian ParkesHOST
29:18
But we're still getting these weird decisions, these weird calls.
Ian ParkesHOST
29:23
You can understand why Bernie Collins said what she said, because at the end of the day, when she talks particularly about strategy, you have to listen because she's been there, lived it, breathed it, perfectly understands exactly what goes on on a team pit wall and the chain of command, the chain of process that then leads to a particular race engineer instructing another driver as to what he should be doing or what's going on on track at any given time.
Sandra WongHOST
32:46
Yeah
Norah WoodseyGUEST
32:46
... um, uh, Bernie Collins, who does the, uh, commentary for the Sky Sports audio, um, for F1, uh, she used to be, um, a, you know, a team strategist for McLaren and a few other teams, and she wrote a book called How to Win a Grand Prix, and it's fantastic.
Sandra WongHOST
33:06
Yeah.
Norah WoodseyGUEST
33:06
And it also sort of illustrates a lot of the problems with being a woman in this industry.
Simon LazenbyHOST
0:44
This is a truly multinational event today because Karun's made his way to Madras.
Simon LazenbyHOST
0:49
Bernie's up in Scotland and back in London.
Simon LazenbyHOST
0:54
How's Madras, Karun? You go back there and see your dad.
Karun ChandhokGUEST
0:59
Yeah, it's been great.
Simon LazenbyHOST
1:39
Like you will be in Portimao this weekend.
Simon LazenbyHOST
1:41
You can see that on Sky as well.
Simon LazenbyHOST
1:42
Bernie, how are you? Enjoy the race?
Bernie CollinsGUEST
1:45
Yeah, I did enjoy the race.
JohnHOST
4:03
Yeah, it's the first time I've seen Bert Mylander with cars in front of him.
AdamGUEST
4:05
It was really weird, and there was some stipulations, and Bernie Collins said it, like something like rule 5.2.3.1.6.4, maybe-
JohnHOST
4:15
Yeah
AdamGUEST
4:15
... was a bit far on, but there was-
AndyHOST
73:54
I would have been totally cool with that.
AndyHOST
73:55
But when I'm listening to people like Bernie Collins, who's got a rule book out and kudos to Bernie Collins, by the way, who actually flipped through all 98 pages of the damn thing.
AndyHOST
74:05
I wasn't willing to do that, at least at that point.
AndyHOST
74:07
But she was telling me she was actually making you smarter as a fan.
EmmaHOST
12:49
Had it been red flagged? Had the race actually started, or was the starting procedure aborted? It was.
EmmaHOST
12:56
Um, but Bernie Collins was very confused about the grid order.
EmmaHOST
12:59
Then they had to say, "Well, actually, it's just gonna be back to what we were gonna start at anyway-
PeterHOST
13:05
Yeah
Robert DoornbosHOST
7:02
Yeah.
Chris McHardyHOST
7:03
'Cause you've got Bernie Collins, you've got Martin Brundle all pointing out, "Well, because the safety car beat them back, they're gonna have to start at the back of the grid." Then we're all in no man's land.
Robert DoornbosHOST
7:12
Yeah.
Chris McHardyHOST
7:12
We're waiting thinking, "Oh, my Lord."

31:30
why have you done that?
Karun ChandhokGUEST
31:31
Maybe they should just offer Bernie Collins millions because she is brilliant.
Karun ChandhokGUEST
31:36
But, you know, they would have to offer millions to take it away from us because we love her and we don't want her to go.
Betty GloverHOST
31:43
Oh, she loves Sky.
BrianHOST
20:08
They're pulling into the pits and Bernd Maylander's like seventh in the order.
BrianHOST
20:11
I'm like, "That's never happened." And then, uh, Bernie Collins announces that they're pushing software to the cars live in the pit lane to fix whatever happened.
BrianHOST
20:22
And I thought the teams were updating their software.
BrianHOST
20:26
No, I don't think that's right.
Sean KennedyHOST
6:28
But there was so much confusion around this.
Sean KennedyHOST
6:29
You had Bernie Collins on the Sky commentary saying that the rules said that in this sort of predicament where you have people dropping off or having issues on a formation lap and the safety car leads them back into the pits, that the restart order is the order they follow the safety car in by.
Sean KennedyHOST
6:46
And that's the letter of the law as the FIA have written it themselves.
Sean KennedyHOST
6:49
This obviously being a completely unprecedented position where it was actually their fucking fault meant that they basically just did a full restart of everything.
