After moving to the state capital of Albany in 1816, Van Buren became leader of a faction known as the Bucktails, which pledged loyalty to the Democratic-Republican principles rather than the political ambitions of particular individuals.

Unlike his predecessor, Van Buren relied heavily on advice from his cabinet secretaries before coming to a final decision.

Two methods of treating these newcomers seemed equally logical to opposite sorts of minds.
