Benedictus

Then shall follow the psalms in order as they be appointed.

And at the end of every psalm throughout the year, and likewise in the end of Benedicite, Benedictus, Magnificat, and Nunc dimittis, shall be repeated, "Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost." Answer, "As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.

Amen." Then shall be read distinctly with an audible voice the first lesson taken out of the Old Testament as it is appointed in the calendar, except there be proper lessons assigned for that day.

He that readeth so standing and turning himself as he may be heard of all such as are present.

Amen.

Then shall be read in like manner the second lesson, taken out of the New Testament; and after that the hymn following, except when that shall happen to be in the chapter for the day, or for the gospel on St. John Baptist's day.

Benedictus, St. Luke one, verse sixty-eight.

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people.

So, um, you know, the closing prayer for the, um, uh, morning prayer is the, is the collect for Mass.

The, um, uh, antiphon for the Benedictus would be e- echoing of prayers at the Mass.

Um, the, the Liturgy of the Hours is leading you to the Mass.

It's, it's coming from the Mass.

Dixit autem dominus servo, redequo depes, procidens autem servus ille, rogabateum dicens, Patientiam habe in me et omnia redam tipi.

Benedictus Dominus Deus Israel, who visited and made his own redemption.

And he raised the horn of the light of the night to the house of David, his son, so that the hope of the saints may be heard, who for centuries have been my prophets, Salute from our enemies, and from all who have heard us, to do mercy to our fathers, and to remember their holy will, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

The Lord has come to his people and set them free.

Benedictus, Dominus Deus Israel, quia visitavit et fecit redemptionem plebis suae, and he will be the root of our salvation, in the house of David his father.

For the Word is the hope of the saints, who for centuries have been my prophets, the salvation of our enemies, and all the demons that have driven us to sin against our fathers, and to remember the will of their saints, and to bear witness to the life of Abraham, our father, daturum se nobis ut sine timore de manu inimicorum liberati serviamus illi in sanctitate et justitia coram ipso omnibus diebus nostris And you, O prophet, if I were to speak to you, I would prohibit the face of the Lord from following your ways.

I would give you the knowledge of the health of your children, in remission of their sins.

He destroyed death and gave us eternal life.

Et erexit cornu salutis nobis in domo David pueri sui.

Sicut locutus est per os sanctorum, quia saecula sunt prophetarum eius.

Pastor eximius, pastoralis vitae specimen tradidit et regulam.

Benedictus Dominus Deus Israel, quia visitavit et fecit redemptionem plebis suae, et erexit cornu salutis nobis in domo David pueri sui.

Sicut locutus est per os sanctorum, quia saecula sunt prophetarum eius.

Salutem ex inimicis nostris, et de manu omnium qui oderunt nos.

All my trust is in your promise.

Jurandum quod juravit ad Abraham patrem nostrum, daturum se nobis: ut sine timore de manu inimicorum nostrorum liberati serviamus illi in sanctitate et justitia coram ipso, omnibus diebus nostris.

Luke also includes quite a few hymns.

So Mary's Magnificat is, um, in Luke, and then Zachariah's Benedictus, Simeon's song as well, and the angel's Gloria.

They're all in the early chapters of Luke, and they became quite famous hymns in the early church.

The book is written in quite polished Greek.

As Anglicans who pray the Book of Common Prayer in the daily offices, and true of Roman Catholics as well, the Psalms and Canticles consistently point out the work of creation.

The Benedictus, the Magnificat, the Nunc Dimittis, all sung in the morning and evening prayers in parishes and monasteries and homes around the world.

These are songs of God's saving action.

within the world of history and the world of nature.
