Two years of time, effort and money has been spent priming English local government for its biggest shake-up since the 1970s.

A plan first pursued by Angela Rayner at the dawn of the Starmer government to sweep away district and county councils and replace them with large single authorities.

The Conservative leader, Kemi Badenoch, said Mr Burnham was living in the past and described his theory of growth as completely wrong.

The Commons was packed for Andy Burnham's Dispatch Box debut, six weeks on from seizing power.

He's no stranger to Parliament, of course, but he last spoke from the front bench 16 years ago as a member of Gordon Brown's government.

Provisional figures show the average temperature, including days and nights, was 16.5 Celsius, up from last year's high of 16.1.

The forecaster says extreme summers are much more likely due to human-induced climate change.
