Was he supportive of your development and career as a writer? Many parents might say, oh, my son's not going to be a writer, especially if you're good at math and physics and But was he encouraging you in that path?

Well, we have to get a right balance because I got logic and the library from dad, but I got storytelling I got from mom.

Yeah, we have to balance it because the real storytelling thing was my mom's gift to me.

And that's because as a child, I was a very stubborn child, quite difficult.

And she discovered quickly after a while that the best way to get through to me was not to tell me not to do things or to tell me off because that was counterproductive.

She realized that the best way to get to me was to tell me a story.

So she had a whole store of stories.

Can you train yourself to get into a certain place to write a certain form or does it come to you?

So, uh, I mean, is there a short way of telling the story how you got from, from that to winning the Booker Prize?

Well, that was intermediary bit.

I'd gone through, I'd gone through the, I'd gone through u- university and then, you know, lost, the scholarship disappeared.

I think it was a touch of corruption back in Nigeria, and, um, then I was homeless.

Um, but, you know, I never stopped writing.

In fact, the period of homelessness was the, the, the real beginnings of my creativity actually, because I just, I just, I just hit absolute bottom, and I would sleep out in tube stations and- You know, I, I just watched the world.

I saw how the world was.
