It was obvious, if you read between the lines, I think, that he was saying, "This is a man who," as Diarmuid says, "di- didn't really know, uh, about the nuances of what we all know is an enormously complex issue." D- d- does that feel right to you?

Yeah.

David, by the way, you've illustrated a, um, a key point about journalism.

Never think a question is too obvious to ask, and I was intrigued to learn from you today that he'd already hinted at it at the beginning, and yet that was only asked by you towards the end, um, because there's so many questions to ask.

I wasn't surprised, not, not because I was expecting him to say that, but because he's so wildly unpredictable, and I think he's very in, in-- With regard to ignorant about Ireland, I think he's very ignorant about foreign affairs.

Well, except that the Advertising Standards Authority said that in, in that generalization about the English, they were, and I quote, "Racist and derogatory towards English people."

Well, I think that it was, um...

I certainly don't think it was racist.

I think we have to be very clear about what racist means.

Racist means racial differences and, um, uh, uh, prejudices that involve racial differences.

I'm not quite sure that I would be thinking in terms of race.

I don't see a huge amount of difference between races of people on these islands, and therefore, um, but y- yes, it's cultural.

It's another to slag off a country who may have had a tougher time of it.

Ben, does that mean that all of these claims about openness and inclusivity ring hollow?

I don't think that this seemingly isolated incident, I'm not saying it's the only time it's happened, but it has been caught on video.

I'm not saying that that means that the event of itself is not inclusive or not friendly.

I was in Belfast city centre myself last evening and there was a very pleasant atmosphere and there were a lot of things going on and I didn't hear anything like that being played.

But I think that there is something that is worth pointing out.

I'm not aware of it having been asked to apologise by the FLA, the organisers or anything like that, or them having spoken on this.

I certainly don't support vandalising of signs.

I'm not sure I would describe it as a hate crime.

And I'm a little bit curious as to the police.

It's actually a question that we're going to be asking the police today.

we have the defacing of signs in the west of Northern Ireland pretty much automatically when they say London Derry, they're scrubbed out, London to read Derry.

And when they say welcome to Northern Ireland, the northern is scrubbed out.
