Stephen McDonald suffered a lot after the shooting.

He spent weeks in recovery at Bellevue Hospital, and every day the family wanted a mass held at his bedside.

So Father Mike went to my dad's bedside...

And he said mass, uh, with my whole family.

He didn't want to be the center of attention.

He went to Bellevue Hospital to meet with survivors, victims, families, and patients still dealing with health effects tied to the attacks.

He issued executive orders honoring victims and their families and directing city agencies to improve emergency response.

Released a batch of records on air quality near Ground Zero that I just talked about.

However, what happened was nobody came.

And what happened from there is the old Bellevue Hospital right across the street became the repository for everything they found out of that whole wreckage mess.

So maybe at a time when we need to teach our young kids the value of that respect for our government and the freedoms they've got.

Imagine if your kid was one of those young firemen that ran into that building that was on fire and crumbling with the idea in mind that I'm probably not coming out.

I was on a motorcycle with my partner.

We were assigned to the morgue, and what our assignment was was we would stay at the temporary morgue, and any first responders that they found, we would give them an escort across to Bellevue Hospital.

so the next morning which was the 12th we got there on our motorcycles at 5 a.m and i was just standing there just looking at the pile of rubble and guys when i tell you there wasn't a desk a chair a computer it was all just dust it was dust and dirt and smoke that's all it was down there so while i was standing there a piece of paper blew up on my booth And I was so tired.

Again, one man, 66-year-old, he was killed.

Two other people, two women, they are now at Bellevue Hospital.

We're told that they are in stable condition.

One correction, the truck driver, actually, of this truck that you're looking at, he is 66 years old.

The man who has died from his injuries, who was walking in this area, we're told he was 77 years old.

Again, this stretches up this way on the Bowery, and again, the part I was talking about, if you cut around the corner here on Canal, the truck was coming down Canal, we believe, jumped the curb around there.

There are parts of these wooden pallets up there, and then somehow kept going, and ended up here.

Many of them had actually gone to Juilliard with Nathaniel before he dropped out in his junior year due to hallucinations brought on by paranoid schizophrenia.

And Nathaniel was, quote-unquote, treated at Bellevue Hospital with shock therapy and Thorazine and handcuffs.

and ended up in Skid Row.

There were also a number of my L.A. Philharmonic colleagues who were terrified of Nathaniel.

That model got exported almost immediately, and I mean immediately, to the United States.

The first Nightingale-style schools opened in stateside in 1873, Bellevue Hospital in New York, a school in New Haven, Connecticut, and Massachusetts General in Boston.

By the early 1900s, there were more than 2,000 hospital-based training schools across North America, and historians who studied this area are very blunt about what happened next.

Hospital administration on both sides of the border figured out something very profitable very fast.
