So what cognitivists say, basically, is that you cannot explain behavior For example, language, Chomsky wrote a famous paper about this.

Jung asked whether some patterns were larger than one human.

Behaviorism asked what could be observed.

And child development asked how patterns form as we grow.

Humanistic psychology asked asked what the human came becoming.

Freud took us beneath immediate awareness.

Young widened the scope with patterns.

Behaviorism showed how experience can shape our behavior.

And then Spock and child development moved us toward the beginning of those learned patterns.

Given his premise, they must be so transformed.

Behaviorism would be equally within its logical rights in assuming that all central processes may be transformed into peripheral.

Given Watson's premises, they must be so transformed.

But you cannot eat your cake and have it too.

It is these three features, then, which seem to have been primarily responsible for the spread and catching of behavioristic categories.

What now does the behaviorist offer as a substitute? We turn to the arch-behaviorist, Watson.

Behaviorism, he says, will be the study of stimulus and response such that given the stimulus we can predict the response, and given the response we can predict the stimulus.

And so if you, if you look at the history of psychology, academic psychology, experimental psychology through the 20th century, uh, um, uh, it's easy to forget, uh, I, I lived through that era.

Uh, behaviorism absolutely dominated academic psychology.

Behaviorism literally excluded subjectivity, not only subjective data in the kind of epistemological or methodological sense, but ontologically, they denied that subjective states exist.

Th- think about it, the very word psychology, uh, the psyche was excluded from psychology.

You know, we were only allowed to study externally observable, objective things, uh, thereby, you know, airbrushing out the very, the very essence-
