Beer stein

After years of making the same mistake, a weary bartender explained that the one-litre glass found in Bavarian beer halls is called a Maas, M-A-S-Z.

A Stein is a similar stoneware tankard, often with a lid.

So Mark was enjoying a Maas, as in midnight Maas.

Whether he finished it, of course, is another matter.

I have never heard of this word.

So never, ever go to a Munich beer hall and ask for a Stein.

You ask for a Maas.

Well, from a Stein hoisting competition to a bratwurst eating contest, the 11th annual Beaches Oktoberfest celebration features all the beloved tropes of an Oktoberfest.

Here to tell us more, we are joined by Nico Kostas.

He is the event's president.

It's my understanding that there was actually no beer at the first Oktoberfest back in Bavaria in the early 1800s.

But that has become kind of a central element of the event is beer.

So are there like a variety of beers? Are there German beers in particular? And what's the deal with the Stein hoisting contests?
