Bedford Vehicles

It was a protest song protesting the demolition of Sophia Town and this place that they were going to be just thrown into in the felt called Meadowlands.

in Bedford Trucks in 1960.

Then I would look at other parts of our tradition.

And one of the wonderful things about South Africans is, yo, we can box heads together and we can call each other names on social media.

Mm-hmm.

At the Tullamarine, and you can see it from the freeway, there's an old Bedford truck-

Right

... and it's been unloved there for many years.

Mm-hmm.

However, at the time it was great.

And then years later I thought, "What a good idea if you could actually, uh, build one of those great Bedford trucks that were, you know, on the-"

Yes

And from that then, it sort of just grew organically.

We went to all the shows around the country in an old Bedford truck and if somebody fell off a pony I'd run over and try and get up on it and just very keen to do it from probably where there wasn't a chance most people would have given up and my dad he wasn't someone to give up you know he just he had a huge work ethic and then I suppose he's passed on some of that to me anyway and then I'm very grateful to him and my mum for bringing me all around to all the shows when maybe they didn't have the finances to do it but that was never really an issue we just went anyway and did the best we could and there was my sister and we all swept out the back of the Bedford and put down the beds and we were happy in Mill Street.

That was our holiday.

So it was, sometimes you can hear people giving out about the things that they don't have.

So second tactical air force, they were the guys that actually supported the advancing front of the 21st Army Group.

So that's um what what they did let's say this has got what they call the bedford 28 horsepower engine in um that had the same engine in as the whole range of the military bedford vehicles um from the 1500 weight mw right up to this uh ql bedford actually said to the mod or all the time at the time that this engine is going to be a bit underpowered for this vehicle.

But the War Department said, no, we want commonality.

So that whole range of the vehicle had exactly the same engine, which in a way has been a bonus because every vehicle had that same engine and a lot of the parts are shared.
