Becky Chambers

Becky Chambers is an incredibly important voice in modern sci-fi.

She's amazing.

She's a Hugo Award winner, primarily known for popularizing hope punk or cozy sci-fi Her books usually focus on empathy, chosen families, and low-stakes character-driven narratives over galactic wars.

We watched Claire North tear the fabric of reality to shreds, forcing us to reckon with the horrifying, selfish destruction we are willing to unleash in the name of love and unaccepted grief.

We let Annalee Newitz completely invert our cosmic perspective using an academic slime mold to prove that the most fundamental human trait isn't our technology, but our desperate need to leave a mark on the wall, even from the margins of ancient Pompeii.

And finally, Becky Chambers showed us the terrifying beauty of mind bleed, proving that absolute connection always costs you a piece of yourself, but in a cold universe, it is a price worth paying.

I think about what I get out of Becky Chambers' books because the overarching theme in all of her books thus far is, well, aside from To Be Taught If Fortunate, that one's a little bit different, but the Wayfarer series and the T-Monk series are...

The moral of the story arc, and at least one way that you can express it, is that it's okay to just be an experience.

You don't actually have to find some grand purpose.

So, but I really love, it was very cozy and maybe I will reread it.

Psalm of the Wild Built by Becky Chambers, monk and robot.

Really sweet, really comforting.

And then it's a toss up between Murder, She Wrote and Faro with David Suchet, but probably Murder, She Wrote.

Specifically the creation of found family, which brings us to the massive sprawling conclusions and expansive world building rounding out our list.

Becky Chambers is releasing As You Wake, Break the Shell.

She is brilliant.

It's a sci-fi duology exploring stubborn survival, persistent danger, and quiet wonder in deep space.

Yeah.

I really enjoy Becky Chambers does a really good imaginative job here.

And any of the books that she writes are well-researched and creative.

So I'm a really big Becky Chambers fan.

Shout out to her novella, To Be Taught If Fortunate.

That's one of my favorites.

I really enjoyed Becky Chambers' Psalm for the Well built.

So this is a solarpunk novella about a robot and a tea monk meeting and working together, too.

So in this story world, it's after this kind of industrial apocalypse.

So they build this relationship and they have these shared common goals too.

And I think it's one of the more wholesome books I've read in a while without being short-sighted or naive too.

I think Becky Chambers always has really interesting ideas with this too.

And I've taught it in my class and also in the book club that I do in Tubingen.
