So first up today, Beaumont City Treasurer has been charged with six felonies for allegedly failing to pay city taxes on the motel he owns in the city.

What's going on there?

Well, like a lot of cities, Beaumont charges a bed tax, also known as a transient occupancy tax, for each night that a guest stays.

According to prosecutors, Anup A.J. Patel, the elected city treasurer, filed false tax returns claiming to have received no rental income on the Salina Motel from April 2020 to December 2023.

He's also accused of using someone else's identity to falsely claim that that person was actually running the motel, formerly a Motel 6, and that that person was responsible for paying the bed taxes.

The city is also seeking to have its attorney's fees paid by Patel.

The city reported the suspected crime to the district attorney's office.
