Beaulieu Palace House

They had the outer one that visitors would first pass through, where they would then reach the inner gate house before heading on towards any of the other monastic buildings.

And it was this inner one that Thomas decided to take and turn into a grand old hunting lodge called Palace House.

Whenever anyone says hunting lodge to me, I immediately think of a little pokey cabin in the woods.

I don't know, that's just where my brain goes.

You can just hear the generational wealth with that.

But he decided to make Palace House their permanent home, so poured a lot into restoring the medieval parts and just generally altering, enlarging, and making it this great big 19th century family home.

Moving forward in time, though, during the Second World War, the house took on a new life temporarily, because it was actually used by the Special Operations Executive, basically training English and foreign spies before they were dropped into enemy territory.
