Beatific vision

We are not made to remain in faith.

We are made for the beatific vision.

That is what will delight our hearts and will fill them with love for God and the hymns of glory for God himself.

That is what we must be already doing here on earth.

We haven't used that phrase, beatific vision, but that's one of the phrases of what we're talking about, the vision of God, seeing God.

So that book, To Gaze Upon God, will take you deep into this theme.

How about if I recommend some of what were my best sources? Because this was not a work done.

Yeah, you know, I have this lecture where I talk about, you know, often I'm typically teaching Protestant students, but I'll talk to them about the ways in which St. Thomas points us to the goal of life being a rightfully defined happiness, which I think to a lot of Protestants is surprising.

You know, we kind of have this sort of sense of anyone who's going to talk about happiness is somehow... perhaps not trustworthy, but the notion of grace and virtue and happiness, and of course I wanna talk about the beatific vision when we get to another song, but this sort of notion of in friendship and the practice of the virtues, having a true, genuine happiness that I think also comes out in this song that you just did.

It's very, very lovely.

So there's a difference between a friar and a monk, right? In the sense that, so a friar is someone who's kind of, their vocation is out in the world rather than cloistered as the monastic.

I mean, I presume, so Veronica, is that the seventh station of the cross? Sixth.

And then I presume that the face-to-face I guess is indebted both to the story of Veronica as well as, well, you tell me, Thomas Aquinas' beatific vision face-to-face? Yeah, the

idea that we're on a pilgrimage in this world to eventually see God face-to-face, the human being wants to find the fullness of truth about our mystery, our condition in life, and That's resolved ultimately when we see God, and that's what grace allows us to do.

Let's talk more about that hope after dwelling for quite a while, as we have in limits and... sort of the finitude of our existence.

You write beautifully about the idea of the beatific vision, this hope of seeing God face to face one day.

And it really struck me that there's a profound difference between that vision of the future and the vision of the future that Silicon Valley is offering us.

What do you think is Can you try and get us to the heart of the difference between a biblical vision of hope and a biblical vision of the future and the vision of hope in the future that AI is holding out for us today?
