Beaches—East York

Liberals won Chicoutimi-le-Fjord in Quebec.

Beaches East York in Toronto and North Vancouver Capilano in British Columbia.

Carney said the results amounted to an endorsement of his government's approach.

The Quebec result was the most striking.

Well, demonizing Stephen Harper, who knew? I think that Avi Lewis should actually go into politics.

Maybe he should have run in the Beaches East York By election, because that was in the neighborhood where he grew up.

But he doesn't have the courage to do that.

He wants to be on the sidelines, yapping, as he just did, about what other people are doing wrong.

Yeah, I know.

There's a lot of people in Beaches East York who think that he hasn't paid enough attention to them, and he's made more pay attention to running for mayor rather than representing his...

On his Twitter, if you look at all the comments that you're saying, because I noticed that he turns a lot of comments off.

Where are we at now on this? So I do want to claim a little bit of prescience on this one, because you will recall on this podcast at the beginning, you know, earlier this year, uh, I did ask the question, like, why would the government choose to start talking about this in a year when there are two elections in waterfront to like, uh, lakeside Toronto ridings? Uh, In a city where the future of the waterfront is always an incredibly tense issue, I feel vindicated because it turns out that when you're having elections in Scarborough Southwest and beaches East York, somebody in Mark Carney's office had the wisdom to think, huh, maybe we don't want to pick this incredibly visible public fight about the future of the waterfront and the island airport.

So the government engaged in that consultation.

They got 87,000 responses, the vast majority of which were negative, opposed to the expansion of the plan.

Before the Beaches East York by-election was concluded, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that they would not be moving forward with any expansion of the airport, the island airport.

It did get a little bit muddled, I will say, because Carney was asked, you know, is this dead forever? And his response was, well, forever is a long time.

And I am reading this perhaps overly charitably as, you know, Mark Carney is still relatively new at politics and he was answering a question like he's like the cleverest boy in the room uh having sometimes been the cleverest boy in the room i'm sympathetic to sometimes you give a smart smart aleck answer right you really shouldn't um so yeah i i think this is probably dead for now but um yeah again we will keep an eye on it uh As far as the premier is concerned, like he has not given up.

So I think it's worth putting that on the record.

The party is still rebuilding after its worst election result in 2025, and the NDP lost three recent by-elections to the Liberals.

But the result in the Toronto riding of Beaches-East York is giving the party some hope.

It was an incredible campaign.

We more than tripled our support from the last election, and we had our best result in more than a decade thanks to your organizing.

She's kinda papering over some of the cracks in the foundation.

And if you were to run into Brad Bradford, the current councilor in Beaches-East York and her biggest rival, or Chris Alexander, who's dro- the former, uh, federal cabinet minister for the Conservatives.

He was, used to be my MP for four years.

Um, no one can quite figure out why he's in the race.

When, when you see...

Well, I think they're funny.

When you see stories in the paper, somebody characterized him as the right-wing or right-leaning city councilor in Beaches-East York.

I know I roll my eyes.

One senior party source not authorized to speak publicly said he could run for one in Toronto.

In last week's by-election, the party tripled its vote share in the riding of Beaches-East York compared to 2025.

Because of this, the party believes one path back for the NDP is in Canada's biggest city.

Um, the ground organizing muscle that they were able to demonstrate in Beaches-East York is significant.

It's important.

According to NDP strategist Jordan Leichnitz, the Toronto by-election result could be a positive sign for the New Democrats.
